CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 1,079 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,822, 32.3% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
57.8% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who value off-road ability and utility. In the expert test drive summary, the 2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is described as being built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts, and it excels at conquering rock-strewn paths. It is also noted for carrying lots of stuff, which adds to its appeal for buyers who need capability and cargo space more than everyday polish.
That same assessment also makes clear where the 2015 Toyota 4Runner asks for compromise. It is described as having too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, so it is not presented as an ideal family vehicle. Owner feedback reinforces the truck’s practical side, with praise for its smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and the rear window that opens like a regular window, while also noting that it is not the most fuel-efficient choice in its class.

Horrible shaking steering wheel, leather wants to tear, no space, terrible gas mileage.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners and 7.33/10 from expert testing point to a model that resonates with shoppers who want capability first. The 4Runner’s appeal centers on its off-road strength, utility, smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability, while the overview also frames it as a rugged SUV aimed at drivers who value utility over everyday polish. That makes it a better fit if you want a truck-like SUV with real capability and cargo space rather than a family-first crossover. The market still shows 32.6% of listings as good or great deals, which is a healthy sign of availability for selective shoppers.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights strong reliability, and the broader ownership picture also emphasizes a vehicle you can count on for off-road use and everyday durability. The expert assessment reinforces that dependable character by describing the 4Runner as a rugged SUV with serious capability, while the cost-effectiveness notes point to free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is accepting the 4Runner’s ruggedness without checking whether prior use or deferred upkeep has left any hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 57.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use or heavy daily mileage. Focus on body condition, suspension wear, tire condition, and signs of hard use, since this model’s appeal often comes from capability that can also accelerate wear. If you’re comparing listings, pay close attention to how the equipment level changes the ownership experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 is rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited shifts toward comfort with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the 5-speed automatic can feel slow to respond when you want extra passing power. The 4WD-equipped versions add traction and downhill-control features that better suit rough terrain.
- Safety package: Every 4Runner gets a reversing camera and Hill Start Assist Control, while 4WD models add Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, upgraded speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, predictive traffic and weather, and a USB 2.0 port. The 7-inch screen is exclusive to the Limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert drive notes 18 mpg in combined driving as the EPA figure, with a real-world test result of 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but the rear-wheel-drive setup makes it the least compelling choice if you want the 4Runner’s core capability. It makes sense only if you’re prioritizing price and plan to add the optional Premium Package for more comfort and tech.
- Trail: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, Multi-terrain Select, and Downhill Assist Control. If you want the strongest blend of off-road hardware and everyday usability, this is the one to target.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized choice, with TRD Bilstein shocks, rear remote reservoirs, TRD front springs, a TRD skid plate, and off-road tires. Buy this if your priority is serious trail use and you want the most aggressive factory setup.
- Limited: This is the comfort-focused pick, with leather, ventilation, JBL audio, parking sensors, push-button start, and Safety Connect. Choose it if you want the most upscale 4Runner experience and spend more time on pavement than on trails.
Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, so that trim has the most complete convenience and emergency-services package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,079 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,393, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $21,818 sits slightly below last year's $22,612.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you should focus on buying well and preserving condition, because clean history and strong maintenance will matter more when you eventually resell. The 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and utility should continue to support demand, especially among shoppers who want a rugged SUV with proven appeal.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Aside from a standard reversing camera, it offers few of the latest active safety features, and blind-spot monitoring is notably absent. Safety Connect is available only on the Limited, where it can connect you with emergency services after a collision or for other assistance. The safety write-up also flags the SUV’s high center of gravity and its rollover susceptibility if you need to make sudden evasive maneuvers, so careful lane positioning and mirror adjustment matter.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds TRD Pro off-road focus and remains a rugged, utility-first SUV.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,335, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,818 average.
- It offers a rugged, truck-like SUV feel with comfortable daily driving and true off-road capability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,213, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,818 average.
- It adds cell-phone navigation and increased towing capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of capability, owner satisfaction, and current pricing, the 2015 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 can deliver much of the same rugged appeal for less money. If you want a newer model and can pay more, the 2016 brings a couple of useful upgrades.
