CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 3,333 currently listed for sale and an average price of $40,014.00, 33.0% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars.
82.3% of 2022 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is known for its rugged off-road capability, spacious interior, and standard advanced safety features, although some owners feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner remains a strong contender in the SUV market, particularly for those who prioritize off-road capability and ruggedness. Its design is rooted in traditional SUV characteristics, making it distinct from many modern crossovers that lean towards comfort and efficiency. The 4Runner is equipped with a powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine, delivering 270 horsepower, which, while not the most refined, provides reliability and decent performance off the beaten path.
Inside, the 4Runner offers a spacious cabin with a maximum cargo capacity of 89.7 cubic feet, making it practical for families and adventurers alike. The standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring that drivers stay connected. Safety is also a priority, with the Toyota Safety Sense suite providing essential driver assistance features. However, potential buyers should be aware of its less-than-stellar fuel economy and somewhat outdated interior design, which may not appeal to everyone.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

There are 3,342 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $38,278.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.00/10.
The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and off-road performance. The spacious interior also comes through as a recurring strength, which helps if you want an SUV that can handle family duty and weekend trips. The main trade-offs are its fuel economy and the sense that you’re paying a lot for a limited feature set.
That fits the 4Runner’s mission: it’s aimed at you if you want a traditional SUV with real off-road capability rather than a comfort-first crossover. The market also shows 31.8% good or great deals, so you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and it also highlights the 4Runner as dependable, rugged, and a vehicle you can count on over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that with language calling the 4.0-liter V6 reliable, even if it isn’t especially refined. Toyota’s five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers.
For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is less about durability and more about living with the 4Runner’s compromises, especially if you rack up lots of daily miles.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear from off-road use, suspension condition, and signs of hard use. You’ll also want to pay close attention to whether the features you expect are standard on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 is the starting point and includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes Toyota Safety Sense P, while features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera require higher trims or added equipment.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It’s described as reliable and decent off the line, but it feels underwhelming in most everyday driving. Fuel economy is 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are not standard.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined, and those figures are the same for rear-wheel-drive and 4WD versions.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 gives you the essentials, but you’ll miss out on comfort and convenience upgrades like heated seats and synthetic leather unless you move up or add packages.
- Sweet-spot trim: The TRD Off-Road is the best fit if you want the 4Runner’s core mission without jumping all the way to the top. It adds four-wheel drive, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system.
- Premium/top trim: The TRD Pro adds the most equipment, including enhanced shock absorbers, a 15-speaker JBL premium stereo, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.
- Off-road trim: If you’ll use it mostly as a daily driver, the TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road can feel like overkill because their hardware is aimed squarely at trail use.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard on the SR5, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system still require higher trims or added equipment.

If you find a listing below $38,278.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $39,994 sits slightly below last year's $42,085.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples should still draw interest because the 4Runner’s reputation and capability remain part of its appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings for rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. If you want blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, or a 360-degree surround-view camera, you’ll need to move up or add equipment. The TRD Pro also adds an off-road camera system.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 keeps the rugged, off-road-focused formula while staying current on core tech and driver assistance.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,511, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,994 average.
- It offers reliability, resale value, and rugged utility with a similar off-road-first character.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,691, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,994 average.
- It adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and capability, the 2022 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 gives you much of the same rugged appeal for less. If you want the newest nearby-year updates and can spend more, the 2023 is the better upgrade path.
