CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 179 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $40,277, 35.2% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
100.0% of 2022 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it stays true to the rugged side of the SUV formula. It may not be optimized for everyday family errands, but it can handle them, and it can also venture into places that many suburban crossovers would avoid. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps offset its old-school character.
That mix of strengths makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability over polish. Its off-road ability is a major draw, and the technology is described as easy to use with standard advanced safety features. At the same time, it comes with clear tradeoffs: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, while some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $39,509 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,213 |
| Year-Round High | $41,111 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,107 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.89% |
Prices have softened 3.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,389 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing trims and prices.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior. The review summary also points to strong off-road performance and a sense that the 4Runner is built for buyers who value capability over polish.
The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. That makes it a better fit if you want a truck-like SUV for adventure and utility rather than a refined daily commuter.
The overview frames it as a rugged SUV that can handle errands but is especially appealing if you want something that can go places many crossovers avoid. With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary highlights reliability, and the expert performance notes describe the V6 as reliable even though it is dated. That combination points to a vehicle that may not feel modern, but is built around durability and familiar mechanical simplicity.
Toyota also backs it with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which adds some ownership reassurance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright dependability and more about living with age-related compromises in efficiency, refinement, and features.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because the 4Runner’s rugged use case can mean more wear than the photos reveal.
Focus on condition, equipment, and whether the truck has been used the way you plan to use it. If you want a trail-ready example, make sure the added hardware is present and functioning; if you want a daily driver, pay close attention to comfort and convenience features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes Toyota Safety Sense P, while the Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is described as reliable and quick off the line, but underwhelming in most other driving situations.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system are not standard.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: It returns 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core 4Runner formula with the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Toyota Safety Sense P, and the standard utility features. If you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup, this is the trim to start with.
- Trail Special Edition: This trim adds a more adventure-focused setup with a cargo basket, sliding rear cargo deck, under-floor storage, a premium accessory cooler, and unique styling. It suits you if you want a more distinctive, outdoorsy 4Runner without jumping to the off-road-focused TRD models.
- TRD Sport: This is the road-oriented choice, with 20-inch wheels, X-REAS performance suspension, a TRD hood scoop, black roof rails, sport badging, and synthetic leather upholstery. It makes sense if you want a more dressed-up 4Runner for pavement use.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value trim for buyers who want the 4Runner’s core mission. It adds 4WD, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system.
- TRD Pro: This is the most capable and most feature-rich off-road trim, adding enhanced shock absorbers, a JBL premium stereo, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.
- Limited: This is the most road-focused upscale trim, with heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and X-REAS sport suspension.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system require higher trims or added equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,389 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.89% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,213, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $39,509 sits slightly below last year's $41,107.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the 4Runner’s value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well it has been maintained.
Its rugged reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time. Even so, the current trend shows that buyers are still price-sensitive, so a clean, well-equipped example should hold up better than one with visible wear or missing features.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings from NHTSA for frontal and side-impact testing, and three stars for rollover testing.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system are not standard, and the TRD Pro adds an off-road camera system.
The rollover result is the main caveat to keep in mind if safety is a top priority. That makes it especially important to compare trims carefully and consider whether you want the added visibility and parking aids on higher-spec versions.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps rugged capability, easy-to-use tech, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,202, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,509 average.
- It emphasizes reliability, resale value, and rugged utility.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,356, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,509 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and the 4Runner’s core rugged appeal, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is worth a look; if you want the newer safety content and can spend more, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
