CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 167 currently listed for sale near Miami, FL and an average price of $36,819.00, 30.5% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it keeps a rugged, adventure-ready character in a market crowded with family-focused SUVs. It may not be optimized for everyday suburban duties, but it can handle them, and it can also go places that many mall-dwelling SUVs would not dare to venture. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps balance its old-school toughness with some contemporary convenience.
That combination makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability and durability over polish. Its strengths include great off-road capability, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. The tradeoffs are just as clear: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, though some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $39,820 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,231.67 |
| Year-Round High | $41,452.55 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,450 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.93% |
Prices have softened 3.93% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 3,410 listings available, you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $38,231.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior. The review summary also points to strong off-road performance and a reputation for durability, while noting that fuel economy is a common concern.
That lines up with the vehicle’s purpose: it is built for buyers who value capability and durability over polish, and it can handle everyday family duties without losing its adventure-ready character. The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy and an outdated interior, so you should expect utility and toughness rather than refinement.
With 28.9% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points directly to reliability, and it also emphasizes that the 4Runner is dependable, rugged, and built for long-term use. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing the V6 as reliable, even if it is dated and not especially quick.
Toyota also backs the 4Runner with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which adds some reassurance for used buyers. For long-term ownership, the bigger risk is less about outright durability and more about accepting higher running costs and a less polished daily driving experience.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear from off-road use, suspension condition, and signs of hard use. You should also pay close attention to whether the equipment level matches what you expect for the trim, since some desirable features are reserved for higher versions.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats, while the Trail Special Edition adds a cargo basket, sliding rear cargo deck, under-floor storage, and a premium accessory cooler. The TRD Sport adds road-oriented styling and X-REAS performance suspension, while the Limited adds leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and parking sensors.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It is described as reliable and decent off the line, but underwhelming in most other driving situations.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are extra, so check whether a used example has them.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core 4Runner experience with standard safety tech, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the model and do not need extra comfort or off-road hardware.
- Trail Special Edition: This trim adds a more adventure-focused setup with a cargo basket, sliding rear cargo deck, under-floor storage, and a premium accessory cooler. It is a good fit if you want a more distinctive 4Runner with practical trail-friendly touches.
- TRD Sport: This version leans more toward road use with X-REAS performance suspension, 20-inch wheels, and sport styling details. It suits you if you want a more dressed-up look and a firmer on-road character.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value choice if you want the 4Runner’s core capability. It adds 4WD, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system, making it the trim most clearly aligned with the model’s rugged mission.
- TRD Pro: This is the most capability-focused version in the lineup, building on the TRD Off-Road Premium with enhanced shock absorbers, a JBL premium stereo, surround-view and off-road cameras, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof. Choose it if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the most road-oriented trim, with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and X-REAS sport suspension. It is the right pick if comfort matters more to you than trail hardware.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera are still extra on some trims, so check the equipment list carefully.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,410 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.93% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,231.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $39,820 sits slightly below last year's $41,450.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the 4Runner’s value is still supported by strong demand for rugged SUVs, but you should not expect rapid appreciation from today’s pricing. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in clean condition, the model’s reputation should help it remain appealing when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings for rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. That gives you a solid baseline of driver assistance even on lower trims.
Some useful safety equipment still costs extra, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. The main caveat is the rollover result, which is weaker than the frontal and side-impact scores.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps rugged capability, standard safety tech, and easy-to-use infotainment in a traditional SUV package.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,222, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,820 average.
- It emphasizes rugged utility, reliability, and resale value.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,450, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,820 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a limited-production special edition.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and the 4Runner’s core strengths, the 2022 is the sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the cheaper route into the same basic formula. If you want newer equipment and do not mind paying more, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
