CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 285 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $36,959, 30.5% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
100.0% of 2022 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it stays true to the rugged side of the SUV formula. It may not be optimized for everyday family errands, but it can handle them, and it can also venture into places that many suburban crossovers would avoid. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps offset its old-school character.
That mix of strengths makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability over polish. Its off-road ability is a major draw, and the technology is described as easy to use with standard advanced safety features. At the same time, it comes with clear tradeoffs: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, while some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

There are 3,396 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior. The user feedback also points to its off-road performance as a major strength, while noting that fuel economy is a common concern.
That lines up with the expert view: the 4Runner is built for capability over polish, with clear appeal if you value adventure-ready utility and easy-to-use tech. The trade-offs are just as clear, though, with poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior.
With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, dependable ownership, and trouble-free use, which is exactly the kind of language you want to hear when shopping used. The expert evaluation also describes the V6 as reliable, even if it is dated.
Toyota backs the 4Runner with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which adds some reassurance for used buyers. Even so, you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition, since age and hard use can matter more than mileage alone on a truck-based SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has seen trail use or towing. Focus on wear items, interior condition, and signs of hard use, since this model’s rugged mission can attract buyers who use it more aggressively than a typical SUV.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats. The Trail Special Edition adds a unique monotone paint scheme, a cargo basket, a sliding rear cargo deck with under-floor storage, a premium accessory cooler, and all-weather floor mats. The TRD Sport adds road-oriented touches, while the Limited leans more toward comfort with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and parking sensors.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is described as reliable and decent off the line, but underwhelming in most other driving situations. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD with low range is available or standard on some trims.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system require extra spending, and the TRD Pro adds an off-road camera system.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point and the best-value starting place if you want the core 4Runner formula without paying for specialty hardware. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Toyota Safety Sense P, and the rugged basics that define the model.
- Trail Special Edition: This trim is for you if you want a more adventure-focused look and useful cargo add-ons. The cargo basket, sliding rear deck, under-floor storage, and accessory cooler make it the most distinctive lifestyle-oriented choice.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-oriented 4Runner with a sportier appearance and suspension tuning. It adds 20-inch wheels, X-REAS performance suspension, a hood scoop, and TRD-specific styling details.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to buy if trail capability matters most. It adds 4WD, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system.
- TRD Pro: This is the most capable and best-equipped off-road trim, with enhanced shock absorbers, a JBL premium stereo, surround-view and off-road cameras, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.
- Limited: Pick this if you want the most comfort-focused 4Runner. It adds leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and X-REAS sport suspension.
The TRD Off-Road Premium adds extra comfort and driver-assistance features, while the TRD Pro builds on that formula with the most complete off-road equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,396 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,213, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $39,601 sits slightly below last year's $41,199.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the softer trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim rather than assuming appreciation.
The 4Runner’s reputation for ruggedness and owner satisfaction should continue to support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment. Stronger trims and cleaner histories are likely to hold attention better than neglected trucks with visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings in rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, bringing forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system are not standard, so you may want to prioritize a better-equipped trim if safety tech matters to you.
The rollover result is the main caveat here, and it is worth keeping in mind if you plan to drive the 4Runner like a typical family SUV rather than a truck-based off-roader.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It balances rugged capability with standard modern infotainment and safety tech.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,237, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,601 average.
- It emphasizes reliability, resale value, and go-anywhere utility.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,377, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,601 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the classic 4Runner formula with a healthier market than the newer model year. If price is your top priority, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want the newer safety content, the 2023 is worth the premium.
