CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 3,425 currently listed for sale and an average price of $40,106.00, 32.9% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
82.4% of 2022 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it keeps a rugged, adventure-ready character in a market crowded with family-focused SUVs. It may not be optimized for everyday suburban duties, but it can handle them, and it can also go places that many mall-dwelling SUVs would not dare to venture. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps balance its old-school toughness with some contemporary convenience.
That combination makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability and durability over polish. Its strengths include great off-road capability, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. The tradeoffs are just as clear: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, though some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $40,029 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,257.07 |
| Year-Round High | $41,830.11 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,826 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.30% |
Prices have softened 4.30% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,478 listings available, which suggests you have room to compare options before you buy.
If you find a listing below $38,257.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.00/10. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and off-road performance. The trade-offs are familiar too: some owners feel it is overpriced for the features it offers, and fuel economy comes up as a common concern.
That fits the 4Runner’s mission well: you’re buying it for adventure, utility, and a traditional SUV feel rather than everyday refinement. With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still some value to be found if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, especially for buyers who want something they can count on over the long haul.
The 4.0-liter V6 is described as reliable, and that durability is part of why the 4Runner continues to appeal to long-term owners. Toyota also backs the 4Runner with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about accepting age-related compromises in efficiency and refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on every candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear, maintenance records, and signs of hard use. Because this model is built for rugged duty, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is reliable and decent off the line, but it feels underwhelming in most everyday driving. Fuel economy is 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system are not standard.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. Aerodynamics have a bigger impact on efficiency than drivetrain choice, and both rear-wheel drive and 4WD versions return the same figures.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 gives you the essentials, but you’ll miss out on heated seats, synthetic leather, and the more upscale touches found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The TRD Off-Road is the best fit if you want the 4Runner’s core capability, including 4WD, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system.
- Premium/top trim: The TRD Pro adds enhanced shock absorbers, a 15-speaker JBL premium stereo, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road are the trims that make the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s trail-first personality, but they are less compelling if your driving is mostly pavement.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system require higher trims or added equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,478 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,257.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $40,029 sits slightly below last year's $41,826.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays cool. For a seller, the current trend suggests you should expect steady demand rather than rapid appreciation.
The 4Runner’s appeal still supports resale because buyers continue to value its rugged image, reliability, and off-road capability. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings for rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view parking camera system are not standard, so you may need to move up the trim ladder or add equipment to get them.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs rugged off-road capability with standard Toyota Safety Sense P and an 8-inch touchscreen.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,314, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $40,029 average.
- It emphasizes reliability, resale value, and rugged utility.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,573, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $40,029 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, capability, and owner satisfaction, the 2022 is the primary path to consider. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the extra safety equipment and are willing to pay more.
