CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 3,399 currently listed for sale and an average price of $40,013.00, 31.8% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
81.6% of 2022 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it keeps a rugged, adventure-ready character in a market crowded with family-focused SUVs. It may not be optimized for everyday suburban duties, but it can handle them, and it can also go places that many mall-dwelling SUVs would not dare to venture. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps balance its old-school toughness with some contemporary convenience.
That combination makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability and durability over polish. Its strengths include great off-road capability, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. The tradeoffs are just as clear: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, though some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $39,972 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,238.53 |
| Year-Round High | $41,568.20 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,564 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.83% |
Prices have softened 3.83% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,428 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $38,238.53, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, and they also value its off-road performance. The main trade-off in owner feedback is fuel economy, along with some frustration that the truck feels overpriced for the features it offers.
That lines up with the expert view: it is built for adventure and utility, not polish. If you want a rugged SUV that can handle daily use and still head off pavement, this year’s 4Runner fits that brief well. Good and great deals account for 33.7% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to reliability, and the broader praise for comfort, ruggedness, and off-road performance suggests a vehicle that many buyers feel confident living with over time. The expert evaluation also notes that the 4Runner’s 4.0-liter V6 is reliable, even if it is dated and not especially quick. Toyota’s five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty adds another layer of reassurance for used shoppers.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright dependability and more about accepting the 4Runner’s older-school driving feel and efficiency.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are not the same as problem-free listings. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear, maintenance records, and signs of hard use, especially if the vehicle has seen trail duty. Pay close attention to condition, because this model’s rugged mission can hide a lot of abuse if you only look at the odometer.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen, but it still leaves some comfort and convenience items for higher trims or packages. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is reliable and gives decent initial punch, but it feels underwhelming in most other driving situations. Fuel economy is 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are extra.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined, and drivetrain choice does not change that figure. That is a meaningful downside if you drive a lot of miles.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 gives you the essentials, but you will miss out on comfort upgrades like heated seats and synthetic leather unless you move up or add packages.
- Sweet-spot trim: The TRD Off-Road is the most compelling choice if you want the 4Runner’s core capability, because it adds four-wheel drive, a locking rear differential, beefed-up skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system.
- Premium/top trim: The TRD Pro is the most feature-rich off-road version, adding enhanced shock absorbers, a 15-speaker JBL stereo, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to watch if you want trail hardware without stepping all the way to the top of the range.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard on the 4Runner, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system require higher trims or options.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,428 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.83% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,238.53, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $39,972 sits slightly below last year's $41,564.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. For future sellers, the softer current pricing means there may be less immediate upside than there was a year ago, but the 4Runner’s reputation still supports demand. Buyers who want a rugged SUV with strong owner satisfaction tend to keep this model on their shortlist.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings for rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. That gives you a solid baseline of driver assistance features even on lower trims.
You still need to move up or pay extra for blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. The rollover result is the main caveat to keep in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the rugged, adventure-ready formula while adding modern infotainment and standard safety tech.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,370, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,972 average.
- It emphasizes rugged capability, reliability, and resale value.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,460, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,972 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current-year pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and standard safety tech, the 2022 is the sensible pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is worth a look; if you want a newer setup with added standard safety equipment, the 2023 may justify the extra cost.
