Summary
With 277 currently listed for sale near Dallas, TX and an average price of $39,998.00, 36.8% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it keeps a rugged, adventure-ready character in a market crowded with family-focused SUVs. It may not be optimized for everyday suburban duties, but it can handle them, and it can also go places that many mall-dwelling SUVs would not dare to venture. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps balance its old-school toughness with some contemporary convenience.
That combination makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability and durability over polish. Its strengths include great off-road capability, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. The tradeoffs are just as clear: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, though some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $40,076 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,244.25 |
| Year-Round High | $41,708.06 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,708 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.91% |
Prices have softened 3.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,426 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $38,244.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and off-road performance, and they also value its ruggedness and spacious interior. The trade-offs are familiar: some shoppers feel it is overpriced for the features it offers, and fuel economy comes up often as a downside.
That mix fits the 4Runner’s mission well. If you want a traditional SUV that leans toward adventure and utility rather than everyday polish, this year’s setup makes sense. The market also shows 32.8% good or great deals, so you still have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable, and the 4Runner’s dated 4.0-liter V6 is called out as reliable and providing a decent jump off the line. Toyota’s safety and convenience package also helps the ownership experience feel more complete, especially if you value a straightforward, durable SUV with a long-term reputation.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the same ruggedness that helps it last can also mean more compromise in daily comfort and efficiency.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with the history report, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear, prior damage, and how the truck has been used. Because this model is built around capability, condition matters a lot: you want to know whether it has lived an easy suburban life or a harder off-road one.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is reliable and gives a decent jump off the line, but it feels underwhelming in most other driving situations. Fuel economy is 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system cost extra.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner returns 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. Aerodynamics have a bigger impact on efficiency than drivetrain choice.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the value starting point, but it leaves out the extra comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The TRD Off-Road is the most compelling choice if you want the 4Runner’s core mission, because it adds four-wheel drive, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system.
- Premium/top trim: The TRD Pro adds enhanced shock absorbers, a 15-speaker JBL premium stereo system, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to watch if you plan to use the 4Runner the way it was intended, but its trail-focused hardware is more than many daily drivers need.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system require higher trims or added equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

- Inventory: There are 3,426 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,244.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $40,076 sits slightly below last year's $41,708.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim appeal rather than on broad market appreciation. Well-kept examples with the right equipment should remain easier to move than rougher ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings for rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view parking camera system are not standard, so you may need to shop higher trims or add equipment if those features matter to you.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs rugged off-road capability with standard Toyota Safety Sense P and an 8-inch touchscreen.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,349, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $40,076 average.
- It emphasizes reliability, resale value, and rugged utility.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,537, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $40,076 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, capability, and available inventory, the 2022 is the smart default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while keeping the same basic formula. If you want a newer-year setup with more standard safety equipment, the 2023 is worth the extra spend.
