CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 296 currently listed for sale near Dallas, TX and an average price of $39,025.00, 37.8% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
100.0% of 2022 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it keeps a rugged, adventure-ready character in a market crowded with family-focused SUVs. It may not be optimized for everyday suburban duties, but it can handle them, and it can also go places that many mall-dwelling SUVs would not dare to venture. Toyota also keeps it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies, which helps balance its old-school toughness with some contemporary convenience.
That combination makes the 2022 Toyota 4Runner appealing to buyers who value capability and durability over polish. Its strengths include great off-road capability, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. The tradeoffs are just as clear: poor fuel economy, sluggish performance, and an outdated interior. Owners also tend to praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior, though some feel it is overpriced for the limited features it offers.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $39,707 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,228.48 |
| Year-Round High | $41,344.83 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,348 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.97% |
Prices have softened 3.97% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 3,425 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare before you commit.
If you find a listing below $38,228.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior. The 4Runner also stands out for its off-road performance and easy-to-use technology, which fit its adventure-first mission well.
The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and an outdated interior are recurring drawbacks, and the driving experience is not tuned for polish. That makes it a better fit if you value capability and durability over refinement.
With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, especially for buyers who want something they can count on over time. The powertrain is described as reliable, and the truck-based character reinforces its long-term durability appeal.
Toyota also backs the 4Runner with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which helps reduce early ownership risk. For used buyers, the main long-term concern is less about whether it can last and more about how much wear the vehicle has already absorbed.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a full ownership and service review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension wear, interior condition, and signs of hard use, especially if the vehicle was driven off pavement. You should also pay close attention to whether the equipment level matches what you expect, since some desirable features are not standard on every version.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats. The Trail Special Edition adds a unique monotone paint scheme, a cargo basket, a sliding rear cargo deck with under-floor storage, a premium accessory cooler, and all-weather floor mats. The TRD Sport adds 20-inch wheels, X-REAS performance suspension, a hood scoop, black roof rails, sport badging, and synthetic leather upholstery. The TRD Off-Road adds 4WD, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system. The TRD Off-Road Premium adds synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and additional driver assistance features. The TRD Pro adds enhanced shock absorbers, a 15-speaker JBL premium stereo system, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof. The Limited adds 20-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and X-REAS sport suspension.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It is described as reliable and decent off the line, but underwhelming in most other driving situations. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD with low range is available.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system require extra spending. The TRD Pro also adds an off-road camera system.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but you can add navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined, and those figures are the same for rear-wheel-drive and 4WD versions.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core 4Runner experience with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an 8-inch touchscreen, and Toyota Safety Sense P. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the model and do not need extra comfort or off-road hardware.
- Trail Special Edition: This trim adds distinctive appearance and utility touches, including the cargo basket, sliding rear cargo deck, and accessory cooler. It suits you if you want a more adventure-flavored 4Runner without jumping to the more specialized off-road trims.
- TRD Sport: This version leans more toward road use with X-REAS performance suspension, larger wheels, and sport styling details. It is the better fit if you want a more dressed-up look and a firmer on-road setup.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value choice if you want the 4Runner’s core mission at its strongest, because it adds 4WD, a locking rear differential, crawl control, skid plates, and terrain management. It is the trim to target if off-road capability matters most.
- TRD Pro: This is the most capable and most feature-rich off-road version, with enhanced shock absorbers, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, and the JBL premium stereo. Choose it if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the most road-oriented trim, with leather, ventilated front seats, parking sensors, and X-REAS sport suspension. It fits you best if you want the most comfort-focused 4Runner.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system are still extra-cost items on some trims.

What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $39,707 sits slightly below last year's $41,348.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the 4Runner’s value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well it has been maintained.
Its rugged reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment are likely to remain easier to move than worn-out ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings for rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. That gives you a solid baseline of driver assistance right away.
You still have to pay extra for blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system. The TRD Pro also adds an off-road camera system.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps rugged capability, standard safety tech, and easy-to-use infotainment in a familiar package.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,190, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $39,707 average.
- It emphasizes rugged utility and reliability.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,448, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $39,707 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and satisfaction, the 2022 is the smart default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the newer safety equipment and do not mind paying more.
