What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

At 56.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use or towing. Focus on body condition, underbody wear, and signs that the vehicle has been used hard rather than just driven normally.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail Premium trim adds off-road-focused hardware and useful equipment, while the base setup is more stripped down and less feature-rich.

• Safety package: The 4Runner includes stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, plus side knee and full-length curtain airbags.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system adds cell-phone navigation, and the backup camera is especially helpful when reversing off-road.
• Fuel efficiency: It returns 17 mpg city/21 highway, with a combined rating of 18.

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.14% compared with last year.
