How do I put my powerless 2011 A4 in neutral to be towed

Asked by Sep 07, 2019 at 09:25 PM about the 2011 Audi A4 2.0T quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I filled my gas tank this morning and my car
wouldn't start. The weak battery message flashed,
so I found someone to jump my car. I drove home
and turned my car off, when I tried to leave a little
later, once again it wouldn't crank. Once again I had
it jumped, but this time I let it run for about an hour
and drove a little before turning it off. A few hours
later the same thing happens, except this time the
battery wouldn't charge and the key is stuck in the
ignition. Now no lights are coming on and I can't
even put my car in neutral to be towed. Does
anyone have any suggestions?

It sounds like the bad alternator failed to charge the battery and with all the abuse, the battery finally quit. You could buy a new battery. Install it and that should produce enough juice to get the shifter into neutral. Otherwise, tell the BMW mechanic the current condition and see if he can tow it as-is.

Thanks... I found someone to actually jump it again and I was able to drive home. I'm going to buy a new battery and if this happens again then I will know it's the alternator. I've had absolutely no problems until yesterday, my car seemed to run perfectly.

I'm glad it's working out for you. With all the battery problems you've had see of your memory settings are still accurate. Disconnecting a battery or having one go completely dead often drains the memory settings and they're sort of a pain to restore; there's a procedure for that and I'm sure it's covered in your owners manual. If your personal and car function settings are OK, apply a battery saver before you disconnect. It's a small plug-in charger that keeps stored data from being lost. If you don't really know about cars, the $100 you pay a good mechanic to do this is worth it, but do inquire about saving memory and how he does it.
