This would have to be seen in person by a mechanic, as there are simply too many things that can be wrong with it to be guessing at. You might have lost coolant from a ruptured hose/fitting, water pump, etc. The symptoms you describe sound like an overheated engine. Whether you have a blown head gasket would have to be determined in person. (it would help if you tell us the mileage and engine type as well.)

It has over 300,000 miles on it and the engine is a 1.6L ... no ruptured hose, no liquid spill at all, of any kind.

300,000 miles - with that kind of mileage you could indeed have a head gasket issue. You can go to NAPA and get something called "Block Tester" which will test for blown head gaskets, cracked block, heads, etc. It will check for escaping combustion gases leaking into the water jacket. Another test would be a compression test of each cylinder, something a shop can easily do.
