Car shut down and mechanic said is the A/C
compressor. Is this something that could
lead the car to shut off?

Sure, if the bearing/clutch on the A/C compressor is worn/seized.

check fuel pump relay first, it's known problem with 01 to 08 fuel pump relay makes bad connection do to getting hot well driving makes bad connection, makes car shut down easy fix pull fuel pump relay bend pins a little and put back in, if doesn't work then A/C compressor maybe problem..
