hard starting in morning

Asked by AudiSean Dec 15, 2009 at 09:40 AM about the 1997 GMC Savana G2500 Passenger Van Extended

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1997, 5litre, battery new, fuel pump replaced appr 3yrs ago, but has always been loud enough to hear kick on & pressurize & if you do not wait for the pump to stop (indicating fuel system is pressurized) then it will not fire.  The last two weeks has seen much trouble starting in morning. Ran fuel injection cleaner, 94 octane fuel, & new fuel filter, still having problems.
Any suggestions beyond new plugs, lines & ignition?

I would say your fuel system is becoming depressurized while it is shut off. There are 3 things it could be. In order of likelyness - A leak in the flexible hose or a faulty check valve in the pressure pipe in the tank on the fuel pump. - a leaking fuel injector, - a bad fuel pressure regulator. You can test for all these conditions with two taps plumbed into the fuel lines just before and after the fuel rail. I would use taps with the same style connectors used between the fuel line and the fuel rail. Don't cut your fuel line and then try to re-attach them with a double sided nipple or something.. Fire hazard.
