About 2022 GMC Savana
If the 2022 GMC Savana looks familiar, that’s because it’s essentially the same van that has been on sale since the early 2000s. The GMC, along with its corporate sibling, the Chevrolet Express, has received small updates over the last 18 years, but the chassis and underlying engineering have remained the same. It’s not clear if or when GMC will unveil a new Savana or other commercial van model, but the current van is expected to continue on through at least the 2023 model year. The GMC Savana is mechanically identical to the Chevy Express van and is assembled in Wentzville, Missouri. Two main configurations denote payload and capability: 2500 and 3500. The 2500 comes in a regular wheelbase with 218.5 cubic feet of cargo volume to the front seat. The 3500 adds an extended wheelbase model that pushes cargo capacity to 255.5 cubic feet to the front seatbacks. Two trims are offered, LS and LT. Vinyl seats are standard for both, but cloth upholstery is available. The Savana passenger van offers seating for up to 15 people and can tow up to 9,600 pounds when properly equipped. The base engine is a 4.3-liter gas V6 that makes 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 6.6-liter gas V8 and a 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder are available, as is a six-speed heavy-duty transmission. The gas V8 was added for the 2021 model year. The Savana can be outfitted as an ambulance, as a taxi, or in a variety of other configurations. GMC offers several packages and customization options for the van that bring additional safety, convenience, and functionality. Though the passenger version isn’t the blank slate inside that the Savana cargo van is, there are several upgrades to make it more comfortable and capable as a people-hauler. Side steps, handicap assistance, and other options prepare the van for life as a commercial vehicle. The standard passenger van comes with swing-out side doors, but a sliding door option is available for $195. Not much in the way of cosmetic upgrades is available, but there are options to upgrade to chrome bumpers and a chrome grille. GMC offers a long list of optional safety features for the Savana, but almost none of them are standard. Forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, rear park assist, and blind-spot monitoring are available. A rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring, OnStar, and hill start assist are all standard.
