Needs more power and torque

Asked by Oct 26, 2016 at 06:41 AM about the 1989 Ford F-150 XL Standard Cab SB

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 1989 ford f150 xl short box with a 302 5.0
liter rwd in it. Mostly all stock not any real
performance upgrades. What are some good ideas
for crankin some power out? No straight pipes,
emissions restrict that shit. Breaks my heart..

I was thinking about just getting a new motor but idk what to get. I want at least a 5.8 if im getting something different but not sure what tranny would work for that. Dont really think my stock one would, any professional input would be nice.

There are endless upgrades for the Ford 302. Headers and a good intake are a start. You can get good performance mufflers that are not very loud. For a lot of power look into high flow aftermarket heads and a cam. If you are towing a lower gear ratio differential might be all you need.

Would it be better to upgrade this motor or buy a different one do you think? Engines almost 30 years old so..
