Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Last week I had work done to my 2012 vw passat 2.5 se.  The driver door was
not opening in the cold and they fixed that.  When I dropped it off it was low on
gas and it sat there for about a week in the cold.  When I left and got on the
highway, my tires spun a little because it was wet and cold, and then the epc
light came and it said not to exceed 5000 rpms.  I filled dup with gas and this
light didn't come back on.  Then a couple days later, after my car sat outside in
the cold for a night I got up to get breakfast and within a minute of driving I got
another error, but this time it was the "low oil pressure, turn off engine" one.  I
pulled over and turned off the engine, and checked the level like the manual
said.  The level was full but not over filled.  So I go back in and turned on the
car and light was gone.  I drove it all day and the light never came on again.  I
have no idea what to do, so I took it to an autoparts store to see fi they could
get some error codes and it had two codes, 5707 and 5709.  When I look
those up I can't find anything about them and neither could the store.  I've had
this car since it was new and have changed the oil over 10,000 miles with 5w-
40.  It's only been 3000 miles since my last oil change and the engine doesn't
make any weird noises.  Can someone please tell me if this has happened to
them and if so what they did?  Because these error messages are definitely
worrying.

Update: Last night I read someone who used the same oil filter as me (Bosch) from auto zone and two separate mechanics they spoke to said that the Bosch filter is out of spec for the 2012 vw passat even though auto zone sells it for that car among other choices. So When I took that oil filter out, the ridges on it were deformed. I replaced the oil filter and let the engine get cold to try and reproduce the issue with the new filter and haven't reproduced it. Also I rad that if the oil pump is bad you would hear a slight ticking and haven't heard that. So if the oil filter doesn't fix it, my next avenue to explore is replacing the oil sensor. On another note, I did see some milky brown substances on the very top of the dip stick and on the filler cap. So I'm not sure if that's normal in winter or not, but the oil on the dip stick is the normal dark brown. No foaming though.

Hey, don’t know if you’re having the same problem still. Did you ever fix it? I’m having LITERALLY the exact same issues at the moment. I have a replacement oil sensor that I’m going to put in next week, and I’ll keep you updated.

Hey Matthew, have you had anything come from the milky brown substance you noticed? I have the exact same issue as well and would like to know if there is any preventative maintenance that could be done. Thanks.

There ended up being a few issues. I needed a new head gasket, and the fuel pump was going bad with a bad fuel sensor relay, or something like that, it's been a while. Oil pump was fine, the issue were fixed by remedying the issues above. Hope this helps!

Also, there was a bad oil filter that I replaced. Do not buy the bosch oil filters, the books say they are in spec, but the spec was changed, and they are no longer in spec for this car.
