CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 454 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,053.00, 33.0% of 2020 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Passat 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
67.0% of 2020 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a practical family sedan that emphasizes space and value. Volkswagen gave it a refresh rather than a complete redesign, so it keeps the familiar formula but wears a new suit for 2020. It is built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the description highlights a car that is huge inside like a full-size automobile, priced like a midsize sedan, and thrifty with gas like a compact car. Those traits make it appealing to buyers who want a roomy, economical sedan without paying a premium.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is spacious, offers plenty of cargo space, and is considered an excellent value for money. At the same time, the 2020 Volkswagen Passat is not trying to hide its age. The available information points to outdated technology and poor ride quality, and the broader takeaway is that it really needed a redesign rather than a restyle. Even so, for shoppers focused on comfort, space, and affordability, it remains an easy car to understand and a sensible choice.

Loaded with luxury items, comfortable for driver and all passengers, this a great value for the money, gets fantastic fuel economy (30/38 real world mpg), and has lots of safety features. The biggest criticism would be a smallish screen for tech and a lack of serious zoom (I miss my 2015 TDI’s crazy torque). Otherwise, a very solid automobile that can be found for comparatively low prices.

Im not gonna be biased since I have this car. Its a very good car. It isnt just decent. The interior is good. The technology is okay and depending on the year it can actually be really intuitive (watch doug demuros videos). I enjoy driving the car it feels a bit luxurious. Definitely feels nicer than driving a Hyundai Nissan Toyota etc. I just enjoy driving the car. I bought mine used and its still great at 65k miles.

* Comfortable and well-equipment with modem amenities. * Very quiet interior at highway speeds. * Very, very fuel efficient, but adequately powerful when needed. * VW includes rubber floor mats by default. * Excellent handling. Factory tires have superior grip and subject to occasional tramming. Dont panic and hold on to the steering wheel.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal for used-car shoppers.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its spacious cabin, quiet interior, value for the money, and fuel efficiency. The review summary also points to enjoyable handling and a strong safety feature set, while noting that the tech screen is small and the entertainment setup feels limited.
On the downside, the expert review calls out outdated technology and poor ride quality, so you should expect a car that feels practical and easy to live with rather than cutting-edge. The overview frames it as a roomy, economical family sedan that prioritizes space and value, which makes it a strong fit if you want comfort and affordability over flash.
With 30.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful shopping opportunity in the market.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a car that feels comfortable, well-equipped, quiet, and efficient, with owners also highlighting its value and safety features. That combination usually lines up with a vehicle people feel good about living with over time.
The expert review also describes the Passat as simple and predictable to drive, with a straightforward powertrain and no unnecessary complexity. Volkswagen’s included first two maintenance visits add a helpful ownership perk early on.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about accepting an older design with dated tech and a ride that can feel inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
At 67.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because the Passat’s value proposition depends heavily on condition, a clean example can matter more than a lower sticker price. You should also pay attention to the ride quality and infotainment usability during the test drive, since those are the areas most likely to shape your day-to-day satisfaction.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S is the least expensive way in, but the SE is the easiest trim to recommend because it blends value and equipment well. The SEL adds more convenience and premium touches, while the R-Line brings a sportier appearance.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas and is tuned for simplicity rather than excitement.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 6.3 inches, and you get App Connect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, a CD player, and Bluetooth. SEL adds navigation and a Fender premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review reports 26 mpg on a testing loop, just short of the EPA’s 27-mpg combined rating.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: Passat S, Passat SE, Passat R-Line, Passat SEL.
Here's the short version:
- Passat S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat’s roomy cabin and standard safety equipment.
- Passat SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most useful equipment without pushing the price into luxury-sedan territory.
- Passat R-Line: Choose this if you want the sportier look and the specific wheel-and-tire setup described in the test drive.
- Passat SEL: This is the most upscale choice, adding navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking steering assist, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights.
The SE is the trim most clearly positioned as the sweet spot, while the SEL is the one to target if you want the most convenience and premium features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

- Inventory: There are 475 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.77% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,856.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $15,051 sits slightly below last year's $16,319.
That price movement suggests the Passat has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point today, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on pricing. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. Condition will matter a lot at resale, especially because shoppers in this segment are often comparing value closely.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat safe?
In crash-test assessments conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2020 Passat earns the top rating of Good.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips every version with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE adds adaptive cruise control with multiple distance settings and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
The main caveat is that the lane-keeping system does not include a separate lane-centering function, so you should not expect the most advanced highway-assist behavior. Even so, the standard safety suite is broad and well thought out for a used family sedan.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 update adds a refreshed look and keeps the roomy, value-focused formula intact.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $14,524, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $15,051 average.
- Adaptive cruise control becomes standard across the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more current-feeling version, the 2020 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better value play, especially if you do not need the 2020’s extra trim choice.
