CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 480 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,605, 28.3% of 2020 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Passat 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a practical family sedan that gets a refresh rather than a complete redesign. Volkswagen builds it in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the car’s appeal has long been its unusual mix of size and thrift: it is huge inside like a full-size automobile, priced like a midsize sedan, and thrifty with gas like a compact car. That combination makes it easy to see why it has been a favorite for buyers who want space and value without moving to an SUV.
Its strengths are straightforward. The Passat offers a spacious cabin, plenty of cargo space, and excellent value for money. Owners also tend to appreciate its quiet interior, comfortable feel, and impressive fuel efficiency, along with adequate power and a luxury-like atmosphere. Those qualities make it a sensible choice for shoppers who care more about everyday usefulness than flash.
The tradeoffs are just as clear. The Passat’s technology is outdated, and its ride quality is poor. Even so, for buyers who want a roomy, efficient sedan with a strong value proposition, the 2020 Volkswagen Passat remains distinctive for doing the basics well.

Loaded with luxury items, comfortable for driver and all passengers, this a great value for the money, gets fantastic fuel economy (30/38 real world mpg), and has lots of safety features. The biggest criticism would be a smallish screen for tech and a lack of serious zoom (I miss my 2015 TDI’s crazy torque). Otherwise, a very solid automobile that can be found for comparatively low prices.

Im not gonna be biased since I have this car. Its a very good car. It isnt just decent. The interior is good. The technology is okay and depending on the year it can actually be really intuitive (watch doug demuros videos). I enjoy driving the car it feels a bit luxurious. Definitely feels nicer than driving a Hyundai Nissan Toyota etc. I just enjoy driving the car. I bought mine used and its still great at 65k miles.

* Comfortable and well-equipment with modem amenities. * Very quiet interior at highway speeds. * Very, very fuel efficient, but adequately powerful when needed. * VW includes rubber floor mats by default. * Excellent handling. Factory tires have superior grip and subject to occasional tramming. Dont panic and hold on to the steering wheel.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.0/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the quiet interior, impressive fuel efficiency, and comfortable, luxury-like feel. They also point to the roomy cabin, strong value for the money, and a car that feels easy to live with day to day.
The main trade-offs are outdated technology and a smaller tech screen, along with a ride that can feel less polished than you might want. For you, that means the Passat makes the most sense if you value space, thrift, and comfort over the latest cabin tech.
With 29.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still some room to find a compelling price.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers describing it as a car they can count on over the long term. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Passat’s straightforward powertrain and simple operation, which supports the sense that it should be easy to live with.
It also includes the first two maintenance visits for free, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical complexity and more about whether the car has been maintained and cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on overall condition, because the Passat’s value proposition depends heavily on finding one that still feels clean, well-kept, and mechanically sound.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base car is the Passat S, while the SE is easy to recommend for its blend of value and equipment. The R-Line adds a sporty look, and the SEL sits at the top with navigation, a premium sound system, parking steering assist, and adaptive headlights.
- Powertrain: Every 2020 Passat uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic. It runs on regular gas and is described as simple and predictable, with enough torque for normal driving.
- Safety package: Every version includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
- Infotainment: The Passat uses a 6.3-inch touchscreen and includes App Connect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD and SiriusXM satellite radio, a CD player, and Bluetooth. SEL adds navigation and a Fender premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive returned 26 mpg in combined driving, and the car is described as thrifty with gas.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: Passat S, Passat SE, Passat R-Line, Passat SEL.
Here's the short version:
- Passat S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Passat’s core strengths: space, value, and the standard safety suite. Buy this if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and don’t need extra convenience features.
- Passat SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist while staying well below the top trim. If you want the smartest balance of equipment and price, this is the one to target.
- Passat R-Line: Choose this if you want the sportier appearance and the test car’s 19-inch wheels and tires. It’s more about style and road presence than a major mechanical upgrade.
- Passat SEL: This is the most feature-rich version, adding navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking steering assist, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights. Buy this only if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, while SE and SEL add extra driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 479 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,582, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $14,582 sits slightly below last year's $16,151.
That price decline suggests the Passat has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. For you, that means the biggest resale advantage comes from paying close to market low and choosing a clean, well-documented example.
Because the model still has strong value appeal and a roomy, practical reputation, demand should remain steadier than for many less useful sedans. A well-kept Passat with good ownership history should be easier to move later than one with accident history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat safe?

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every version includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings the refresh, roomy cabin, and strong value proposition that define this year.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $14,466, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $14,582 average.
- Adaptive cruise control becomes standard across the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed Passat with strong value, the 2020 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending a bit less and getting standard adaptive cruise control, the 2021 is worth a look.
