CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 468 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,952, 30.3% of 2020 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Passat 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
66.0% of 2020 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a practical family sedan that gets a refresh rather than a complete redesign. Volkswagen builds it in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the car’s appeal has long been its unusual mix of size and thrift: it is huge inside like a full-size automobile, priced like a midsize sedan, and thrifty with gas like a compact car. That combination makes it easy to see why it has been a favorite for buyers who want space and value without moving to an SUV.
Its strengths are straightforward. The Passat offers a spacious cabin, plenty of cargo space, and excellent value for money. Owners also tend to appreciate its quiet interior, comfortable feel, and impressive fuel efficiency, along with adequate power and a luxury-like atmosphere. Those qualities make it a sensible choice for shoppers who care more about everyday usefulness than flash.
The tradeoffs are just as clear. The Passat’s technology is outdated, and its ride quality is poor. Even so, for buyers who want a roomy, efficient sedan with a strong value proposition, the 2020 Volkswagen Passat remains distinctive for doing the basics well.

Loaded with luxury items, comfortable for driver and all passengers, this a great value for the money, gets fantastic fuel economy (30/38 real world mpg), and has lots of safety features. The biggest criticism would be a smallish screen for tech and a lack of serious zoom (I miss my 2015 TDI’s crazy torque). Otherwise, a very solid automobile that can be found for comparatively low prices.

Im not gonna be biased since I have this car. Its a very good car. It isnt just decent. The interior is good. The technology is okay and depending on the year it can actually be really intuitive (watch doug demuros videos). I enjoy driving the car it feels a bit luxurious. Definitely feels nicer than driving a Hyundai Nissan Toyota etc. I just enjoy driving the car. I bought mine used and its still great at 65k miles.

* Comfortable and well-equipment with modem amenities. * Very quiet interior at highway speeds. * Very, very fuel efficient, but adequately powerful when needed. * VW includes rubber floor mats by default. * Excellent handling. Factory tires have superior grip and subject to occasional tramming. Dont panic and hold on to the steering wheel.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.0/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious cabin, quiet interior, and impressive fuel efficiency, and they also call out the value for the money. The review summary also points to adequate power and a luxury-like feel, which fits a sedan that aims to be practical without feeling bare-bones.
The trade-offs are clear: the technology feels dated, and the ride quality is a weak spot. That matters most if you want a more modern-feeling daily driver, but it is less of a problem if your priority is a roomy, comfortable family sedan.
The Passat’s appeal is strongest if you want everyday usefulness, a large interior, and a straightforward ownership experience rather than flash. Good and great deals account for 30.0% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a comfortable, well-equipped car that many drivers describe as quiet, efficient, and enjoyable to live with over time. It also highlights dependable-feeling ownership traits such as a luxury-like atmosphere, strong value, and a car that many owners feel good about keeping for the long haul.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the powertrain as simple and easy to live with, with a conventional automatic transmission and no complicated driving-mode setup. That kind of straightforward hardware can be a plus when you want a used sedan that is easier to understand and maintain.
Volkswagen also includes the first two maintenance visits for free, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical complexity and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or airbag deployment. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and whether the car’s safety and convenience features still function as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Passat S is the simplest version, while the SE adds more equipment and is easy to recommend for its value balance. The SEL sits at the top with navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking steering assist, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights, while the R-Line adds a sportier appearance and larger wheels.
- Powertrain: Every Passat uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. It does not need premium gas, and the setup is praised for its simplicity.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE trim adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
- Infotainment: The cabin uses a 6.3-inch touchscreen, and standard App Connect includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get HD and SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a CD player, while SEL adds navigation and the Fender premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Passat averaged 26 mpg in testing, just short of its 27-mpg combined rating.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: Passat S, Passat SE, Passat R-Line, Passat SEL.
Here's the short version:
- Passat S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Passat formula at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the room, value, and standard safety equipment without paying for extras you may not use.
- Passat SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades while staying easy to recommend. You get adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist here, which makes it the sweet spot for shoppers who want more comfort and driver assistance without jumping to the top trim.
- Passat R-Line: Choose this if you want the sportier look and the larger-wheel stance, along with the same basic Passat strengths. It is more about style than a major mechanical change.
- Passat SEL: This is the most feature-rich version, adding navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking steering assist, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights. It suits you best if you want the most convenience and the most complete equipment list.
The safety package is strongest once you move up to SE, where adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist join the standard collision-avoidance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 474 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,717, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $14,717 sits slightly below last year's $16,281.
That decline suggests the Passat has softened in the used market, which can work in your favor if you are buying now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.
Because the Passat is a value-focused sedan, clean examples with strong equipment and a good service record should hold buyer interest better than rougher ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2020 Passat earns the top rating of Good from the IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every version includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE trim adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
One important caveat is that lane-keeping assist does not include a separate lane-centering function. Even so, the Passat’s standard safety equipment is broad, and the expert score reflects that strength.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model year brings a refresh that updates the Passat’s look and keeps its roomy, value-focused formula intact.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $14,516, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $14,717 average.
- The 2021 trims the lineup and adds standard adaptive cruise control across the board.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, space, and current-year pricing, the 2020 is the better all-around pick. If you are focused on spending a bit less and do not mind a slightly simplified lineup, the 2021 is the more price-conscious alternative.
