Car died... trouble starting.. when it does knocks really bad? Possible coil?????

Driving down the road my car died..will barely start, when it does.. I have to keep foot down the pedal or it will stall... also when it does start it knocks really bad, like a rod gone or something... a guy who helped push the car to the side of the road said it sounds like eletrical and the coil is bad... any info would help.. Thanks

Find out what the knock is first, if it is a rod then the coil is a mute point as the engine will have to be overhauled. I have never seen a coil make a rod knock sound.
