Can anyone tell me what the deal is with having to have the battery "serialized" to the car's computer? The dealer said the car would have drivability problems and might not even run if the battery wasn't serialized to the car's computer. Is this true?
This seems true, some BMWs and VW say this, as the Mini is a BMW seem they would require the same. Just another way to drag you back to the dealer.
Yes, the computer needs to be told that the car has a new battery so the charging system can handle the charging capabilities properly on the car. If you don't, you might be replacing the battery sooner than later.
Yes, it needs to be done. It is another way to relieve you of some of your money.
Can most automotive shops serialize the battery to the car's computer or does it have to be done at the dealer or can I do it?
Fro what I can gather it is the dealer that has to do it. Some kind of reintialization process
Yes, BMW dealers or an independent garage that works on BMW's will have the software.
The charging system has a variable alternator that works in conjunction with the battery to change the amperage output depending on the electrical load. The battery / charge circuit "learns" over time and when a new battery is installed the battery's charging and discharging characteristics are slightly different. The system has to be reset and the battery "registered " with the cars computer. This is pretty standard on German gear. If you can think and read / learn... simple 10 min to do. 1. purchase j1962 to RS232 cable or the K+Can to Usb Can -bus cable. I check out every software product available for diagnostics...
