mini cooper 2006 r58 battery changed at home

Asked by Gigi Dec 03, 2018 at 03:33 PM about the 2006 MINI Cooper S Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My mini cooper 2006 r58 battery was dead so I tried changing it at home but
whenever I would try to install the new one it would be pulling power making it
(very dangerous) and impossible to install the pore into the battery. The thing is
since the battery is in the back of the car once the new battery comes in it
starts turning on the light of the trunk and the sensor starts showing a door
open. Not sure how can I kill all power for it

If you are getting a very large spark, you might have the polarity wrong. Be careful not to burn something out. However a small quick spark is just things powering up. That's normal. Take a good look at the old battery and get it right to avoid trouble. The post diameters are a clue. The larger one is positive...smaller one is negative.

My information shows your car (non-turbo?) takes a group #47 battery, not #58. That sometimes means that the posts are reversed, causing you to get the polarity reversed. Charge up the old battery long enough to drive/return the wrong battery. Don't turn motor off until you are back home, or take your wrenches.
