Tundra stock gas cap has a plastic cap by the spring. Does the gas cap need to be replaced?

Asked by May 10, 2016 at 08:18 PM about the 2011 Toyota Tundra Tundra-Grade Double Cab 4.6L

Question type: General

Stock gas cap had a piece that is round with a half moon cut out that fell off
and got lodged in my filler neck and had to pay $330 to have it removed. I am
a little nervous about replacing the gas cap and having the issue again.

How did they justify that kind of cost just to remove the lower gas cap sealing vent? Check aftermarket too see if they have an updated gas cap, unless the dealer already has a superseded part number in stock.

I appreciate your response. They charged me to run a camera down toe fill neck and saw something lodged at the gas tank. Then they had to remove the tank to get the piece out. It wasn't until later I discovered what the plastic piece was from. I told the service dept and they looked amazed and couldn't believe it. That was it. I tried a after market gas cap once and in a short period of time the check engine light came on.

Ok so aftermarket hasn't got it together yet for your year, did you check with the dealers parts department to see if there is an updated gas cap? Man I still can't believe that price though, what was the shops labor rate? That might be the factor on the price.
