Does this seem like a computer or sensor problem, and can these problems be related?  Do we have to wait for gears and motors to start snapping and popping?

The no heat/fan on cold start and transmission concerns are most likely not related. With it going into reduced power mode it's trying not to eat itself and most likely needs to be serviced by a mechanic that not only has the right computer equipment to do a thorough diagnosis but has the training to repair it properly.
