Asked by jims74camaro Jan 18, 2017 at 04:45 PM about the 2009 Kia Sportage LX V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Smoke tested and found no leaks. I hooked up my
scan tool to check fuel trim and O2 sensors.
Everything seems normal except: stft b1 s2 (%) is
NA. Could this be the problem? Can someone
check this data to see if you notice anything off. I
am just learning how to check live data on my scan
tool. I need to get this car back on the road quick
and don't have time for classes LOL.

P0171 KIA - Bank 1 System Too Lean.... Possible causes Intake air leaks, Faulty front heated oxygen sensor, Ignition misfiring, Faulty fuel injectors, Exhaust gas leaks, Incorrect fuel pressure, Lack of fuel, Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection.....P0174 KIA - Bank 2 System Too Lean.... Possible causes Intake air leaks, Faulty front heated oxygen sensor, Ignition misfiring, Faulty fuel injectors, Exhaust gas leaks Incorrect fuel pressure, Lack of fuel, Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection... If the P0171 is combined with the P0174 code, it's very likely that the problem is caused by an intake leak.

I smoke tested the intake manifold and found no leaks. I should have specified I smoke tested the intake manifold. Forgot to finish that sentence. Mass air flow look good but I use a cleaner and cleaned it very carefully anyway. Exhaust leaks? An exhaust leak before the O2 sensor would cause fresh air Correct? But in this case I would have to have an exhaust leak before both front O2 sensors also correct? I do have a bad exhaust system.

Most of the stuff I've read says that if it's not the intake manifold is most likely an O2 sensor. Would you agree? Just want to 7rb pinpoint this a lot more before I spend money. And I would like to learn how to read this live data some also. Did you look at the pic I posted? What is with the (na)on the short turm fuel trim B1 S2?

Also can I post more than one pic on this site? I have two more live data shots I would like to post.

Yes you can keep posting a new picture, only one per response. I see this must be the 2.7L engine. How is the egr valve, system and gasket?

I put a new air filter in it and clean the mass airflow sensor. I actually didn't think this was going to be the problem and I'm still waiting for the check engine light come back on but everything seems good so far. I'll get back to you if the light comes back on. Thank you very much for the info!

I just got back on here and was reading these old posts. I want to tell you what the problem was with the 09 kia sportage. It was the mass airflow sensor. There is a way to test it by unplugging the wire to it. And if the engine trys to stall it is good. If the engine continues to run it's bad because the engine is in something like limp mode. Or open loop? I can't remember which but you can look this up online. After replaced it's run great since! And way better fuel mileage!
