Is it recommended to service the transmission-change

Not a flush but drain it.

Book calls for service every 30,000, so then your due now.

So is it something that should be done now if it has never been done? Can it cause the transmission to slip or go out if we do it now for the first time?

If it has never been done then yes do it now and hope it is not too late, if the fluid color is dark or black that is not a good sign. If it is working now then add a quart of TransX during the refill. Hopefully it will help clean it up internally.
