A/C shut off

2008 grand prix gxp..dash reads shut off a/c
to protect engine..my temp gauge has also
dropped as if not reading..the car isnt
showing overheating..wat is causing this

Would go to parts store and have the obd codes read. Could be anything from a coolant temp sensor to a ecm module issue.
