Electrical system failure after stereo installation by Best Buy

Asked by Suzannejones32 Aug 07, 2016 at 01:39 AM about the 1992 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight 4 Dr Regency Elite Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I need help desperately. My son leaves for college
Monday morning and he is taking his car. He had an
amp and subs installed at Best Buy. The car was
running absolutely perfectly before that. We got a
call that install was complete but car wouldn't start.
Now ALL electronic functions are not functioning
except the ones doing very strange things like the
radio that comes on when the keys are taken OUT
of the ignition. Car will not start, acts like battery is
dead but it isn't and starter isn't moving, Windows,
lights, horn doesn't work. Store is claiming this is a
magical coincidence. I need ideas quickly please-so
Grateful for any help!

I would have them go back over their work to see if they had knocked off a wire by mistake or forget to plug a connector back in.

Also check for a blown engine fuse in fuse box under the hood.

Thank you for your help. So check for a blown engine fuse? (I can't drive it to get it back up There) please excuse my ignorance but is that one fuse or a group of fuses and do you happen to know where that would be located?

Like I said in my answer there is a fuse box under the hood and for location of fuse Google owners manual for the year, make and model of your vehicle will take you to sites that will show you location of fuse box and fuse location.

You can buy a mini- and maxi- fuse kit at any parts store, it will include a fuse tester. Even if you don't know what the fuse is for, you can still replace it if it is blown. Just touch the tester to every fuse and swap out the bad ones. (It does require a charged battery to test with.)
