07 Mini Cooper Coolant Disapearing

Asked by cxit13 Oct 13, 2018 at 12:15 AM about the 2007 MINI Cooper Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car has recently had some overheating
issues and it seems to be due to coolant that
is disapearing maybe from a leak, maybe
from something else? The car is a 2007 Mini
Cooper 1.6 L 4 cylinder, standard trim with
131k miles on it. Below I’ve tried to
summarize as best as possible:

-Twice now I’ve found that the coolant level
in the tank has dropped well below the “low”
line after filling it up completely with coolant
-There appears to be a little bit of coolant
dripping from beneath the car, just slightly
towards the passengers side
-Before this happened, after just a short 15
min drive, first the engine tempatire light
goes off and on periodically before showing a
red oil light
-After turning the car off, the coolant level is
at zero, and the car is smoking / steaming
from the hood on the passangers side with a
foul smell
-originally I thought this was an issue with oil,
I have very recently had an oil change, there
appears to be no visible signs of oil leakage,
oil levels are good and the oil appears to be
clean
-after adding coolant, the engine is still
starting and turning
-I have not previously noticed any coolant
leakage on the ground before
-I have never previously had any issues with
the car overheating

Check the thermostat - I think it's behind the engine? My 2008 Mini Cooper sprung a leak there and never dripped on the pavement because it hit the engine and evaporated first. Eventually would drain the whole coolant reservoir in a 3 mile drive.

Water pump could have sprung a leak/gone bad. That is what happened to my 2008 Clubman.
