Keys Locked in Ignition, battery dead, 2007 Pontiac Torrent

Asked by Scott Jan 09, 2015 at 06:20 AM about the 2007 Pontiac Torrent Base AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 Pontiac Torrent 60,000 miles no problems so far. It is about 20 below with
the wind chill went to start my car in the AM, found the keys in the forward (on position)
and cannot get them out ignition. The battery is dead. Tired moving steering wheel back
and forth while turning the key...this didn't work. How do I fix?, please advise.

On the Torrent/Equinox once the battery goes dead the ignition switch will lock the key inside of itself. If the battery was dead, without leaving the key in the ignition, and you tried starting it it wouldn't let you take the key out either. Some weird safety/anti- theft thing I guess. All you have to do is jump start it with another vehicle and jumper cables or a jump box/pack. Once the torrent has charged back up(20-30 min) and you shut it off the key will come out like normal.
