my battery light came on and steering became difficult

Clearly your serpentine ("fan belt") and/or the tensioner broke. This belt provides power to the alternator (battery), the power steering, and the water pump. Best to stop the motor until it's fixed. Could limp it home is not too far or fix it on the spot. (I hate tow trucks.)
