oil leak in 95 VW Beetle

Asked by Jan 14, 2013 at 01:26 PM about the 1999 Volkswagen Beetle 2 Dr GLS 1.8T Turbo Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

check oil light has been coming on/off for 4-6 months.  Every time it comes on I have added a quart of oil to it.  The light came back on and I started to fill it with a quart and all of the oil just poured out of my car onto the ground.  Any idea where the leak could be coming from?

You could be burning it or it's burning off the exhaust. Any spot on the ground where you park, and smells, blue smoke out the tailpipe? You don't just add oil till it overflows. It sounds like you over filled your engine. The car will run rough and can blow out some more seals. Take it to a competent mechanic who can help you.

If you didn't over fill the engine, there may be a hole blown through the side. Is there a dip stick that you can check? Is the oil coming out of the opening where you pour it in? It may be best to call the shop to pick the car up instead of driving it anywhere.

Yes there have been small spots underneath my car for a few month. I did not overflow it with oil. Everytime I filled it I had checked to make sure it needed it. The dipstick shows that there is no oil in my car whatsoever. The oil flowed out from somewhere underneath.
