Can my Sienna run without a catalytic converter
I do not have much power in my van. I took it to a shop and they said the
catalytic converter and the resonator needs replacing. I cannot afford their
price. Can it run without the converter? Thanks
Yes. Is it legal? No.
Yes, but it will have a stinky exhaust smell and will not pass any emissions testing. It will also be illegal in all states. Will you get caught? Very unlikely.
Your check engine light on the dash will be on constantly as well. Very annoying (at least to me). Have you priced a universal converter? They're much cheaper than a direct fit one and just as good. I put a universal converter on my 2000 Grand Prix back in 2013 and have had no issues with it. You'll have to know if you have Federal or California Emissions. The emissions decal under the hood will tell you. If the decal says "Conforms to California Emissions standards" or "Is C.A.R.B. compliant" you have California Emissions. With the converter it does make a difference. HTH. -Jim
