VSC and check engine light came on 2003. Some hose is cracked the entire length. What is this hose and why did it happen?

VSC (vehicle skid control) probably on because of your split vacuum line.. I can only guess this is a high mileage vehicle Scan it for codes too.

ok, split vacuum line. Might this have been caused by heat, recent oil change, just old age? 100k miles

All of the things you mentioned age, climate conditions,100K rubber and heat = deterioration.

What would be the liquid that sprayed out of it? The residue dried a white color. I taped as much of the hose as I could with electrical tape until I can get it to my mechanic. Is there a reservoir I should check?
