i need a rebuilt trans. is it worth it and how much does this usually cost

Rebuilt trans for an Audi? I'd say around $3000-5k w/labor. Only worth it if your going to keep the car for a long time to recoup the costs and that's not having anything else go wrong. What is the condition of the rest of the car? Call some local mechanics, or transmissions shops for free estimates.

Those costs are for a rebuild, they can go higher if you have a replacement thrown in.

You other option could be a used transmission.

Yes, evaluate the car's overall condition carefully. It is 21 years old. I'd recommend a good used transmission from a salvage yard. You can search part.com to get prices. But remember, unless you do the job yourself, add in the labor cost as well. HTH. -Jim
