What is the gas mileage for 1975 Toyota pickup 20R 4 speed manual trans

I drove 54 miles & burn  almost a full tank of fuel.

Around 18 to 20 unless someone put in a low geared rear end, but even with that it should get around 9 to 10. Is it blowing black smoke out the tail pipe?
