The 5th digit of the VIN will be a U for the 402.

180,819 MC's were produced in 1972, I don't have a break down on engines.

TDolby, that's true for 1972, but the question is about a '71. The '70 and '71 VIN had no information to identify the size of the engine. Chevellestuff.net and FGMCC.COM are both great sources for decoding. Dan Dan
