when driving car shifts in and out of OD

bangs in and out of overdrive when cruising - seems to get worse as car warms up

Sounds like your OD band internal to the transmission is burnt. You need to remove the trans to do so, and since that band is worn, your better off replacing the others. So you should lock out OD in the meantime you save up for a transmission rebuild or replacement.
