Can I change the place of the battery from underneath the rear seat to the front trunk with an extended cable back to the engine in a 1974 beetle?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Dear Sir, I find the place(underneath the back seat) of the battery in my 1974
beetle as a very big hassle especially that the back seat is in itself a hassle
to remove to reach the battery. So I was thinking to place it up in the very
front of the front trunk. I'm aware that the gas tank is their and that could be
a risk. But is it doable " technically" or is it too far to extends a cable from
front to back?  I've heard so many opinions but still not sure.
thank you.

Yes it is something that can be done, but the cable size has to be increased, in y buggy days we used arc welder cable and made up a set that would work, also would make a ground cable that would go all the way back to the engine and attach it to a transmission or starter bolt and make sure the ground straps are in good condition or you might have light and gauge problems, and use a gel cell battery, I wish they have those back then, it could have saved a lot in corrosion repairs for acid eating out the battery box under the seat.

Technically, you can relocate the battery. You would need to buy a battery tray and bolt it down. Then buy longer cables and run them back to the engine. I really don't think it would be worth the effort. I would recommend spending a little extra on a good quality battery and leave it where it is.

Buy a battery box to keep the battery and your car safe. The cables should probably be upgraded to #1 or #2 wire.
