2001 Jetta won't start after sitting in underground parking for 10 months

Asked by Dec 02, 2014 at 03:29 PM about the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My jetta won't start after its been sitting for almost a year, the key buttons don't work
either, nothing works, windows, lights, mirrors etc. I did try to jump it with cables attached
to my husbands car. Lights, mirrors, windows started working but the engine wasn't
turning on. The engine sounded like it was trying to start but it only lasted a second.
I did a bit of reading online, some say the key needs to be recoded, some say the
immobilizer needs to be reset, whatever that means. But all issues online start from a car
the has power but a failed engine. My jetta has NO power and a failed engine.

Please help

Few thing to concider. Are you using heavy gage jumper cables? Thin ones wont work as well. leave the jumper cables connected with the other vechicle running for at least 5 minutes before trying to start the Jetta. I would say, you would be better off buying a new battery if the other one is more than 4 or 5 years old. Also, beware that gasoline goes bad after awhile. Once you are able to get the engine turning then you can address the old gas afterwards if it has gone bad.

is it a tdi if it is the oil might be very viscus and will need heated if there is a block heater on the vehicle

Hi thanks for responding, I bought the cheapest pair of cables I could find, 13 bucks. Maybe I should let the other car run for a while before I try to start my engine
