Ground cable on air cleaner

Asked by MARK Mar 05, 2020 at 09:01 AM about the 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Question type: General

So I am unsure of this. I just acquired a 1977 Monte and
was changing the air cleaner assembly. There is a what I
believe is a ground cable going from the air cleaner post, to
the fire wall to the hood. What is this for? And do I need to
replace it when I change the assembly?

KEEP IT! That is a factory ground strap. Back in the late 70 they had grounds everywhere, valve cover to firewall, air cleaner stud to firewall (or hood), brake booster, engine to subframe, etc. If you remove ground straps electricity will make it's own path to ground often with undesirable effects, and the firewall must have good grounds for the gauges. That is a really clean and original looking engine bay so by all means, KEEP that ground right where it is.
