Check the serpentine belt to make sure one is there. Any warning lights on the dash?

Sounds like you blew one of the fluid lines between the pump and the steering box. Did you notice any fluid leak or other indicator? Is the pump fluid level OK or is the reservoir empty? If I am right, you will need to have the blown line replaced and the pump refilled and operationally checked to insure it did not burn up without fluid.
