1999 GMC Sierra 5,7L - How do I check the code with a paper clip ?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a fuel issue I suspect. I have changed the fuel filter and do not have any money to waste on sensors or fuel pump unless I KNOW that is the issue. I read a post in here where someone told an owner of a 1996 model to put a wire or paper clip in the adapter/plugin for finding code under the steering column, I believe it was in the upper right hole and the one right next to it, but it didn't work on mine. I had the engine off and the key turned to the on position but there was no flashing of anykind. Can someone instruct me on how to do this for my 1999 Sierra 5.3 or 5.7L engine please? Thanks
David

Thanks but what if you can't get your vehicle there? Isn't there another way?

If it is the gen 3 or newer body style then first it's the 5.3, and I'd be careful with that, one of those prongs is a hot lead that obviously powers the obd scanner. TBH I've never heard of this done on these model trucks, I'm betting that advice was for the noid light crowd.
