Hard starting

Asked by Jan 12, 2018 at 10:16 AM about the 1980 Chevrolet C/K 20

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok so I have had the alternator tested, put in a new
battery, fixed starter wiring (it was a friggen
disaster!) Cleaned the linkages at the carb and
replaced a bad negative battery cable. Immediately
after this work she turned over beautifully and I
drove her. Parked overnight and yesterday had a
very hard time starting her again. Had to crank for
a while before she fired up. Very high rough idle for
a few minutes then evened out and ran ok. Now I
just drained my battery trying to start her. Engine
cranks but will not fire up. Gas in the carb so I'm
believing the fuel pump in this tank is good since it
feeds the carb. At idle you can hear what sounds
like the timing may be off. There's a definite skip at
idle.  And I just noticed a buzzing when I was trying
to crank her.

Sounds like you may have a couple of problems, first it sounds like the carb is flooding the engine as it sits not running, that's why its hard to start, pull a spark plug and see if it's wet with fuel, if it is you may need to overhaul the carb, then check for voltage drops, it still sounds like you have some.
