Yes. The camshaft drives a gear on the distributor which in turn drives the oil pump shaft.

It isn't supposed to but if someone replaced the oil pump and took the retainer off of the shaft, it can

cause mines is attached to the distributor and cant get it off,but i would like to switch to electric,so would i have to get another rod

Yeah, you will. NAPA Auto parts used to carry an Electronic Ignition kit (Echlind I think) that will directly replace the points system without replacing the distributor. It's been a very long time since I've done a conversion but I've done it to a '66 Dodge Dart and a '68 F-100 - years ago.
