Toyota Corolla History

The Corolla is Toyota's compact sedan. It became available in the U.S. in 1968, making it the first Toyota car to be sold in America. Corollas are known for their value and reliability, making them a popular choice for first-time car owners, but also for commuters and those looking for a no-fuss, low-maintenance vehicle.

The Toyota Corolla arrived in the U.S. at a time when small import cars were just starting to have an impact on the market. The early Corolla was a little too small and underpowered for American consumers, but the next generation proved to be very popular and set the pace for the Corolla's frequent presence on the best seller lists.

By 1997, the Corolla had become the best selling car ever, and in 2005, Toyota celebrated the 30 millionth Corolla sold. Over the years, Corollas have seen several different incarnations, including a wagon and a coupe. Currently, the Corolla is available only as a sedan.

Corollas are perhaps most famous for their longevity. Owners often describe them as "bulletproof," and some claim to have racked up more than 600,000 miles.
