  • Cossetting interior

Cons

  • Awkward handling

  • Poor third-row comfort

  • It’s a pricey version of a Ford Explorer

Pros

  • Small and easy to park

Cons

  • Underpowered

  • Lots of plastic inside

  • Excessive interior noise

Reviews Summary

The Ford Explorer appeals for its ability to haul the family while also towing a trailer. Its rear-wheel-drive (RWD) platform gives it a sporty character for a three-row SUV, and the top models are powerful. A gilded version of the Explorer, the Lincoln Aviator keeps the Ford’s more potent optional engine, while introducing far more interior quality and luxury. However, like other Lincolns, it sacrifices sportiness for a comfortable ride.

Verdict: The Ford Explorer’s towing capability and interior space are appealing, but for buyers who want a more comfortable and relaxing cabin, as well as more tech and style, the Lincoln Aviator is the step-up choice. Buyers who opt for the Dynamic Handling package can recapture some of the Ford’s body control, too.

Reviews Summary

Automakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback.

Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car.

Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

Look and feel

2026 Lincoln Aviator

8/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

4/10

The 2026 Lincoln Aviator was a luxurious take on the Ford Explorer, offering a premium feel with its rear-wheel-drive unibody platform. Its exterior design was elegant, featuring a long dash-to-axle ratio, a slightly raked profile, and restrained character lines. The Aviator's reverse-horseshoe grille, adorned with chrome jewelry, was flanked by LED headlights that seamlessly integrated into the grille. The sides showcased an "Aviator" badge as a piece of body jewelry, while the rear boasted a full-width LED taillight and "Lincoln" lettering. Inside, the Aviator's interior was its main attraction, especially in the Black Label trim, which offered curated designs with upgraded leather and unique themes like Flight, Moonbeam, and Invitation, each with distinct materials and design elements.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue was classified as a crossover SUV, though it resembled a tall hatchback. Its design was more crossover than car, with a small and narrow appearance, an upright windshield, and SUV cues like a bluff nose and standard roof rails. The Venue's high nose was complemented by lower headlights and high-set daytime running lights, while black wheel flares around small wheels added to its SUV-like look. Inside, the Venue's interior was simple and functional, featuring a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that resembled an iPad. The use of body-color trim around the air vents and shifter brought some of the exterior's flair inside.

Performance

2026 Lincoln Aviator

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2026 Lincoln Aviator prioritized passenger comfort with a smooth and powerful performance. It was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 383 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Aviator could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under six seconds, offering a worry-free passing experience. Its suspension system, featuring adaptive dampers, provided a smooth ride, though it exhibited body lean through corners. The optional Air Glide suspension added control and versatility, allowing for adjustments in ride height. The Aviator also came with a Class III trailer tow package, capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue was one of the least powerful vehicles on the market, with a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine generating 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The power was delivered through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels. The Venue's acceleration was modest, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds, aided by its lightweight design. While peppy in city traffic, the Venue struggled at highway speeds, with the transmission causing engine noise. Handling was stable and direct, benefiting from the Venue's small size and low weight, though the ride could be jiggly on rough surfaces.

The Aviator's cargo space was generous, with 16.9 cubic feet behind the third row, expandable to 75.9 cubic feet with the second row folded down.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue's interior was practical, with cloth and H-Tex seats offering comfort and manual adjustments. The rear seat provided adequate space for average-sized adults, though taller passengers might find legroom lacking. The Venue's cargo space was modest, with 18.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable to 31.9 cubic feet with the seats folded flat. The Venue's interior featured hard black plastic surfaces, with limited soft-touch materials, reflecting cost-cutting measures.
