Reviews Summary

The Jeep Cherokee returns for the 2026 model year after a two-year hiatus. It’s once again a compact crossover SUV aimed at popular models such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, but features more traditional styling than its predecessor. That’s not the only thing about the Cherokee that got a major rethink, because this is also the first Cherokee—and the only current North American-market Jeep—with a hybrid powertrain.

Verdict: The redesigned Cherokee successfully merges traditional Jeep styling with the winning template for mainstream crossover SUVs.

Reviews Summary

Automakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback.

Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car.

Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

2026 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

4/10

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee, with its new KM model, presented a more traditional and less divisive design compared to its predecessor, the KL model. Its boxy shape echoed the classic XJ Cherokee from the 1980s and 1990s, though it risked blending in with the many crossovers adopting a similar rugged aesthetic. The iconic seven-slot grille seemed less distinctive, resembling a generic Jeep imitation. However, the rear design was more successful, combining an XJ-like profile with aerodynamic elements and taillights featuring the unique “X” pattern reminiscent of jerry cans. The Cherokee's proportions were well-suited for a compact SUV, sharing the Stellantis STLA Large platform with other models like the Dodge Charger and Jeep Wagoneer S.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue, classified as a crossover SUV, leaned more towards a tall hatchback design. Its compact and narrow appearance was more akin to European runabouts than typical American SUVs. The Venue's upright windshield and bluff nose contributed to its SUV-like demeanor, complemented by standard roof rails. The high nose, lower headlights, and high-set daytime running lights added to its crossover appeal. The Venue's design was further defined by black rocker panels and wheel flares around its small wheels, with a two-tone roof option for added flair. Inside, the Venue offered a simple and functional design, with a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that resembled an iPad affixed to the dash.

Performance

2026 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee's performance specs initially seemed uncharacteristic for a Jeep. It featured a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a two-motor hybrid system, delivering 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. This setup placed it between the Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4 hybrids in terms of power. The standard all-wheel drive system was basic by Jeep standards, utilizing a clutch-based rear-axle disconnect system for improved fuel economy but lacking the capability of traditional 4WD systems. Jeep's Selec-Terrain drive modes and impressive approach and departure angles enhanced its off-road potential, though the test drive didn't allow for off-road testing due to weather conditions. The hybrid system was smooth, and the Cherokee was quiet and comfortable, though the steering required adjustments for optimal performance.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue, on the other hand, was one of the least powerful vehicles on the market, with a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The power was channeled through a CVT to the front wheels, with no AWD option. Despite its modest power, the Venue's lightweight design allowed for a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds. The Venue felt peppy in city traffic but struggled at highway speeds, with the transmission slow to respond. Handling was aided by its small size and low weight, making it agile in traffic and easy to park. However, the ride could be jiggly on rough surfaces due to its solid rear axle.

Form and function

2026 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

6/10

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee offered competitive headroom and legroom for front-seat passengers compared to rivals like the Subaru Forester and Kia Sportage hybrids. However, forward visibility was slightly hindered by a deep dashboard and steeply raked windshield. The Cherokee's seats were comfortable, with power adjustments available on higher trims. Rear-seat passengers had adequate headroom, but competitors offered more legroom. Cargo space was limited compared to rivals, with 33.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 68.3 cubic feet with seats folded. The Cherokee's towing capacity of 3,500 pounds was impressive, matching only certain Toyota RAV4 Hybrid versions. The dashboard was uncluttered, with important controls easily accessible, though some buttons were hard to find at a glance.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue's interior featured cloth and H-Tex seats with manual adjustments, providing comfort and a sporty appearance. Headroom was ample, but legroom was limited for taller occupants. The rear seat could accommodate average-sized adults, but space was tight for taller passengers. The rear seats folded flat to offer 31.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which was modest compared to typical compact crossovers. The Venue's rear cargo floor lifted to access a compact spare tire, revealing cost-cutting measures like the lack of sound deadening. The interior was dominated by hard black plastic, with limited soft-touch surfaces.

Technology

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee came equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, running the Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with USB-C ports for both rows. Wireless device charging was available on higher trims. The Uconnect 5 system was stable and upgradable via OTA updates, though the digital instrument cluster's graphics were plain. Vehicle settings were split between the touchscreen and dashboard buttons, causing some confusion. The native navigation system was laggy compared to Android Auto, and the audio system offered little difference between lower and higher trims.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue featured a simple 8-inch touchscreen for basic infotainment functions. While the screen size felt small by modern standards, it was functional and responsive. The Venue lacked features like navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM satellite radio, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included. The digital instrument cluster displayed limited information and was not programmable. The audio system was a basic six-speaker unit, with no premium option available.

Safety

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee offered standard driver-assistance features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Active Driving Assist was also standard, providing automated lane centering and adaptive cruise control for highway driving. Traffic-sign recognition was standard on the Overland model, and a surround-view camera system was optional. Crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were unavailable at the time of writing.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue, despite being a budget choice, came with a good set of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, and a rear-occupant warning. Blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert were available on all but the base SE. However, adaptive cruise control was not offered. The Venue's safety systems worked well, though the driver attention monitor was overly sensitive. The Venue received a four-star rating from the NHTSA, while most vehicles received five stars. The IIHS had not released full safety ratings, but the Venue received a top "Good" score in the small front overlap test.
