2023 Lincoln Aviator Reviews Summary

There is a reason that Ford’s Lincoln luxury division emphasizes the ethos of “Quiet Flight” when discussing its products, and our 2023 Aviator Black Label Grand Touring proved itself the epitome of this concept. It quietly glides everywhere you go, swaddling you in comfort, luxury, and high-tech features. And Lincoln hasn’t altered this formula for the new model year. Aside from a new Jet Package (blacked-out trim) and a new Special Edition Luxe Package (black-painted roof), each newly available for Grand Touring models, there are no changes to the 2023 Aviator lineup.

2024 Lexus TX Reviews Summary

Verdict: Lexus has sold three-row SUVs in the past. But they were either originally engineered for serious off-roading (GX), too expensive (LX), or too cramped for third-row passengers (RX L). The 2024 Lexus TX is none of these things, making it perfect for the typical three-row luxury SUV buyer who spends almost all their time on paved roads. Overall, based on our week testing a TX 350 Luxury model, this new Lexus SUV gets most things right.

Look and feel

2023 Lincoln Aviator

8/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator presented itself as a sophisticated three-row, midsize SUV, boasting a modern Lincoln design that was both appealing and luxurious. The Black Label Grand Touring model, with its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine paired with a 10-speed hybrid automatic transmission, offered a powerful yet refined driving experience. The interior was lavish, featuring high-end materials like soft leather and a simulated suede headliner, though some chrome details felt less premium. The cabin's Art Deco-inspired design, with its rich caramel-hued leather seats, was visually striking, albeit a bit overwhelming for those preferring minimalist aesthetics. Despite its elegance, the Aviator's wheels and key fob design left something to be desired, and the electronic door latches required careful handling to avoid pinching fingers.

In contrast, the 2024 Lexus TX, based on the Toyota Grand Highlander, managed to carve out its own identity as a luxury SUV. The TX's styling was more conservative than other Lexus models, appealing to those who found previous designs too bold. Our test model, the TX 350 Luxury, featured 22-inch wheels that enhanced its upscale appearance. Inside, the TX offered a Peppercorn interior with premium semi-aniline leather and artificial suede, though the dark color scheme felt a bit too somber. The third-row seating was notably more accommodating for adults compared to previous Lexus models, and the overall cabin space was well-utilized, providing a comfortable and practical environment for passengers.

Performance

2023 Lincoln Aviator

7/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring was a plug-in hybrid that delivered impressive performance with its 494 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque. Despite the added weight from its electric motor and battery, the Aviator managed a 21-mile electric driving range and averaged 23 mpg in hybrid mode. The SUV offered various driving modes, including Pure EV for electric-only driving and Preserve EV to save battery charge. During testing, the Aviator demonstrated its ability to maximize efficiency, achieving an equivalent of 163.4 mpg during electric driving. However, the drivetrain's responsiveness was inconsistent, and the regenerative braking system required careful modulation for smooth stops. The Aviator's handling was commendable, thanks to its Dynamic Handling Package, but it lacked the fun factor, focusing instead on providing a quiet and smooth ride.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350, equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, produced 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated to 60 mph in eight seconds, offering adequate performance for typical driving situations. The TX 350 FWD had an EPA rating of 23 mpg combined, though it averaged 20.4 mpg during testing. The optional AWD improved traction and slightly enhanced acceleration. The TX's suspension struck a balance between firmness and comfort, providing a smooth ride with commendable body motion control. The steering was accurate and responsive, and the interior remained quiet on the highway. However, the brake pedal felt too soft, though it was easy to modulate for smooth stops.

Form and function

2023 Lincoln Aviator

2024 Lexus TX

8/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator prioritized comfort with features like a four-zone automatic climate control system, heated and ventilated seats, and massaging front seats. The second-row captain's chairs were spacious and supportive, but the third-row seating was cramped and best suited for children. With the third-row seats in use, the Aviator offered 18.3 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 41.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. Maximum cargo capacity was 77.7 cubic feet, making it less practical for those needing ample cargo space.

The 2024 Lexus TX addressed previous shortcomings in Lexus's three-row SUVs by providing a more spacious and comfortable third-row seat. The TX 350 Luxury featured premium materials and amenities like heated and ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. The second-row bench seat was less welcoming due to its flat cushion, but the third-row seat was habitable for adults, offering leg support and a good view. The TX provided 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 57.4 cubic feet with the seats folded, and a maximum of 97 cubic feet, making it more versatile for cargo needs.

Technology

2023 Lincoln Aviator

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Black Label Grand Touring was equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a navigation system. However, it ran on the outdated Sync 3 software, which struggled with voice recognition and point-of-interest accuracy. The 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D audio system delivered exceptional sound quality, and the SUV offered wireless charging and a Phone As A Key digital key system. The head-up display was visible even with polarized sunglasses, and parking sensors and a surround-view camera aided in parking.

The 2024 Lexus TX, with the optional Technology Package, included a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera. However, the unmarked steering wheel controls and head-up display visibility issues with polarized sunglasses were drawbacks. The Lexus Interface infotainment system, with its 14-inch touchscreen, offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the Drive Connect subscription provided cloud-based navigation and a digital assistant. The 21-speaker Mark Levinson PurePlay audio system delivered impressive sound quality, enhancing the overall tech experience.

Safety

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator came with Co-Pilot360 driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. The system performed well on highways but struggled in dense traffic and curves. The Aviator received a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.

The 2024 Lexus TX featured the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, offering adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. The Proactive Drive Assist provided additional braking and steering assistance, though it was not always transparent. The TX also included blind-spot monitoring and traffic jam assist. The LSS+ 3.0 system was generally smooth and effective, though it slowed too dramatically when other vehicles cut in.
