Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

Reviews Summary

You may not have heard much about the Lexus TX, the company’s full-size three-row SUV. Introduced for the 2024 model year, it’s still a young’un compared to its competition, but has made its mark by offering a spacious interior and three different powertrains, wrapped in a stylish package.

In Lexus’ seven-model SUV lineup, the TX slots between the GX and LX—two body-on-frame models focused on off-roading. You can snag a gas-powered TX or one with a hybrid powertrain, but for this review we're focused on the 550h+ plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV offers the most power and best fuel economy, but also has the highest price.

Verdict: The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ is a great option for large families that need a spacious third row, but some of the technology comes with a steep learning curve.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was a striking presence on the road, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, which gave it a traditional SUV styling. It featured a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile reminiscent of the smaller 2021 Grand Cherokee L. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. Its grille leaned forward slightly, adorned with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel center caps were protected by an acrylic glass covering. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture, shared with the standard Wagoneer, allowed for independent front and rear suspension, while aluminum and composite materials helped reduce weight. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered a luxurious experience with high-end materials, 24-way power front seats, and Nappa leather upholstery, setting it apart from its sibling.

The 2026 Lexus TX, available in various trims, offered a modern and sleek design with a large grille and sharp bi-LED headlights. The 550h+ plug-in hybrid trim stood out with its standard panoramic glass roof and Matador Red Mica paint. The TX featured 22-inch wheels that filled out the wheel wells, and its rear LED lighting spanned the vehicle's width, complemented by a small roof spoiler. Inside, the TX provided a spacious third row with a recline function and ample headroom, making it comfortable for adults. The interior boasted multi-zone climate control, heated and cooled front seats, and ambient lighting. However, the material quality fell short of luxury standards, with basic plastics scattered throughout. The redesigned door handles, which reacted to pressure rather than pulling out, were a unique touch, though some might have preferred more attention to detail elsewhere in the cabin.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a robust 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds, impressive for its 6,400-pound weight. The vehicle came standard with a Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, featuring a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential for optimal traction. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system, also standard, offered adjustable height settings for various driving conditions, providing up to 10 inches of ground clearance. Despite its power, the Grand Wagoneer was best suited for a leisurely pace, as its ride could become bouncy at higher speeds, and its steering was imprecise.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid combined a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a hybrid system to produce 404 horsepower. The vehicle offered multiple drive options, including electric-only, hybrid, and gasoline-only modes, catering to different driving needs. The TX featured Normal, Eco, Sport, and Custom drive modes, with Sport mode enhancing throttle sensitivity for a more responsive drive. The 550h+ provided a smooth and quiet ride, seamlessly transitioning between gas and electric power. Its all-wheel-drive system could distribute power between the front and rear wheels, and a Trail Mode helped maintain traction on slippery surfaces. The TX's suspension effectively absorbed bumps, making it an ideal choice for long road trips.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

8/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Infiniti QX80. However, front-row space was more limited compared to the Escalade and Navigator. The Grand Wagoneer boasted 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place, expanding to 70.9 cubic feet with the third row stowed. With all rear seats folded, it offered 94.2 cubic feet of cargo space. The vehicle had a maximum towing capacity of 9,850 pounds, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. Standard features included a sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ provided standard luxury features, including multi-zone climate control, heated and cooled front seats, and heated second-row seats. The third row was spacious, with a recline function and ample headroom, making it comfortable for adults. Each seat had its own cupholder and USB-C port. The second-row captain’s chairs featured a removable center console, though folding the seats flat required a specific sequence of lever flips. The front seats were roomy but lacked thigh support. The TX offered excellent cargo space, with 20.2 cubic feet available with all seats in place, expanding to 57.4 cubic feet with the third row flat and 97 cubic feet with the second row folded. All TX models could tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Technology

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a comprehensive infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The McIntosh audio system, simultaneous Bluetooth pairing, and a 4G-LTE WiFi hotspot were standard. Second-row passengers had access to a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Grand Wagoneer also offered a separate 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, Amazon Alexa connectivity, and Fire TV for Auto. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with an Android-based operating system, supported over-the-air updates, though the screen response was occasionally slow.

The 2026 Lexus TX featured a 14-inch color touchscreen that was user-friendly and responsive. However, some features lacked polish, such as the inability to manually input satellite radio stations. The steering wheel housed multi-functional buttons that controlled volume and adaptive cruise control, but their functions were not labeled, leading to confusion. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, though connectivity issues occasionally arose. The TX offered a subscription-based in-dash navigation system, voice assistant, and digital key via the Lexus app. The backup camera provided a clear view, and the available Advanced Park system handled parking duties. The vehicle included seven USB ports and wireless charging, with an available 120-volt/1500-watt outlet in the second row.

Safety

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer came equipped with standard safety features, including a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, intersection collision assist, and rear parking sensors. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor, night vision, traffic-sign recognition, and two levels of driver-assistance systems. Active Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, requiring drivers to keep their hands on the wheel. A hands-free version was planned for future release.

The 2026 Lexus TX included the Safety System+ 3.0 as standard, featuring forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, Lane Tracing Assist, lane departure warning with steering assist, traffic sign recognition, and Proactive Driving Assist. The adaptive cruise control worked well once set up, though the steering wheel controls were confusing. The NHTSA had not released safety ratings for the 550h+, but the TX 350 and TX 500h earned five stars. The IIHS rated the TX as "Acceptable" in the small overlap front crash test on the driver’s side and "Good" for the passenger’s side.
