Reviews Summary

Porsche is synonymous with performance. From the automaker’s inception and first production model, the 1948 Porsche 356, it has built vehicles that are fun to drive and engineered with German precision and excellence. Well, mostly. There have been some duds along the way. But that doesn’t apply to the Macan, a compact SUV that is Porsche’s best-selling model. As it should, the 2022 Porsche Macan drives more like a sports car than a sport/utility, and it receives several updates to keep it fresh as Porsche prepares an electric replacement for the popular SUV.

Reviews Summary

You may not have heard much about the Lexus TX, the company’s full-size three-row SUV. Introduced for the 2024 model year, it’s still a young’un compared to its competition, but has made its mark by offering a spacious interior and three different powertrains, wrapped in a stylish package.

In Lexus’ seven-model SUV lineup, the TX slots between the GX and LX—two body-on-frame models focused on off-roading. You can snag a gas-powered TX or one with a hybrid powertrain, but for this review we're focused on the 550h+ plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV offers the most power and best fuel economy, but also has the highest price.

Verdict: The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ is a great option for large families that need a spacious third row, but some of the technology comes with a steep learning curve.

Look and feel

2022 Porsche Macan

10/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design from its 2015 debut, despite undergoing several updates over the years. The latest iteration featured a refreshed styling, larger standard wheels, and a new center console with haptic touch controls, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The Macan lineup included the base model, Macan S, and Macan GTS, with the latter two benefiting from high-output powertrains. Our test vehicle, a Macan S, was equipped with nearly $20,000 in extras, including performance upgrades and aesthetic enhancements, bringing its MSRP to $87,670. The Macan's exterior, with its Volcano Gray paint and 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, exuded a sporty and athletic look, while the interior, featuring red leather and metallic accents, offered a luxurious and purposeful ambiance.

The 2026 Lexus TX, available in various trims, offered a few updates for the model year, including a standard panoramic glass roof for the 550h+ and a new Matador Red Mica paint option. The TX's design retained a large grille and sharp bi-LED headlights, with rear LED lighting spanning the vehicle's width. Inside, the TX provided a spacious third row with ample headroom and USB-C ports for each seat. The interior featured multi-zone climate control, heated and cooled front seats, and a mix of materials, though some plastics detracted from the luxury feel. The redesigned door handles, while innovative, seemed unnecessary, and the overall material quality lagged behind competitors like the Volvo XC90 and Mercedes-Benz GLE plug-in hybrids.

Performance

2022 Porsche Macan

10/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powerful engines, with the base model featuring a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Macan GTS inherited a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 from the previous Macan Turbo, delivering 434 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Our Macan S test car was equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6, producing 375 hp and 383 lb-ft, capable of accelerating to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. The Macan's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and fully variable AWD system enhanced its performance, while the re-tuned steering and suspension improved ride and handling. The Macan S, with its optional 21-inch wheels and performance tires, offered exceptional grip and stability, making it a joy to drive on winding roads.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid generated 404 horsepower from its 3.5-liter V6 and hybrid system. The TX offered various drive modes, including Normal, Eco, Sport, and Custom, allowing drivers to tailor their experience. The 550h+ provided a smooth and quiet ride, with seamless transitions between gas and electric power. The AWD system could distribute power between the front and rear wheels, while a Trail Mode maintained traction on slippery surfaces. The TX's suspension absorbed bumps and potholes with ease, making it an ideal choice for long road trips. The brakes were firm and linear, providing confidence in various driving conditions.

Form and function

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a comfortable experience for the driver and front-seat passenger, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats providing heating and ventilation. However, the rear seats were cramped, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned center console with haptic touch controls added a modern touch, but its touch-sensing nature required drivers to look away from the road. Cargo space measured 17.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable to 53 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ provided standard luxury features, including multi-zone climate control and heated and cooled front seats. The third row was spacious, with a recline function and ample headroom. The second row featured captain's chairs with a removable center console, though folding the seats flat was a bit complicated. The front seats were roomy but lacked thigh support. The TX offered excellent cargo space, with 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expandable to 97 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The TX could tow up to 5,000 pounds, adding to its versatility.

Technology

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan came equipped with a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a navigation system. The system was intuitive, though the voice recognition lagged behind competitors. The Macan offered stereo volume and tuning controls below the screen, allowing easy access to frequently adjusted features.

The 2026 Lexus TX featured a 14-inch touchscreen, though some features lacked polish. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, but connectivity issues occasionally arose. The TX required a subscription for in-dash navigation and other features, limiting access without an active account. The available Advanced Park system and rear-camera mirror added convenience, while seven USB ports and wireless charging ensured devices stayed powered.

Safety

4/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring was optional, and the Macan offered parking assistance features. However, it lacked more advanced driving assistance technologies, and no safety ratings were available from NHTSA or IIHS.

The 2026 Lexus TX came standard with Safety System+ 3.0, including forward collision warning, lane centering, and traffic sign recognition. The adaptive cruise control worked well, though setting it up was confusing. The TX 350 and 500h earned five-star ratings from NHTSA, while IIHS gave the TX an "Acceptable" rating for the small overlap front crash test on the driver's side.
