Reviews Summary

Porsche is synonymous with performance. From the automaker’s inception and first production model, the 1948 Porsche 356, it has built vehicles that are fun to drive and engineered with German precision and excellence. Well, mostly. There have been some duds along the way. But that doesn’t apply to the Macan, a compact SUV that is Porsche’s best-selling model. As it should, the 2022 Porsche Macan drives more like a sports car than a sport/utility, and it receives several updates to keep it fresh as Porsche prepares an electric replacement for the popular SUV.

Reviews Summary

After a shortened 2023 introduction, the 2024 Lyriq is the first full model year of Cadillac's midsize electric SUV. The Lyriq is the luxury version of the GM Ultium EV platform used in other EV SUVs, including the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Honda Prologue, and Acura ZDX. With ample power, just over 300 miles of range, and a properly upscale interior that finally looks different than a Chevy, the Lyriq is a good contender if you're shopping for a higher-priced, two-row electric SUV. We tested a fully-loaded Lyriq Sport at nearly $80,000.

Verdict: As an EV, the Lyriq is average. As a Cadillac, it’s much better than anything else in the showroom. Traditional brand hallmarks, such as a cavernous back seat and a gentle ride, blend with big screens and significantly improved material quality. But it's still not up to the luxury standard that Cadillac promises.

2022 Porsche Macan

10/10

2024 Cadillac LYRIQ

9/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design from its 2015 debut, despite undergoing several updates over the years. The latest iteration featured a refreshed styling, larger standard wheels, and a redesigned center console with haptic touch controls, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The Macan lineup included the base model, Macan S, and Macan GTS, with the latter two benefiting from high-output powertrains. Our test vehicle, a Macan S, was equipped with nearly $20,000 in extras, including performance upgrades and aesthetic enhancements like Volcano Gray paint and 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels. The Macan's exterior design, with its sloping hood and athletic stance, communicated its performance-oriented nature, while the interior, adorned with red leather and metallic accents, exuded a sporty and upscale vibe.

The 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ, on the other hand, boasted a striking exterior design that commanded attention. Its long hood and low ground clearance gave it the appearance of a sleek sedan, reminiscent of the classic Seville. The LYRIQ featured vertical light bars with LED headlights that performed a light show upon unlocking, and a grille with dynamic lighting effects. The Sport trim, tested in all black with 22-inch wheels, presented a bold and imposing look. Inside, the LYRIQ showcased meticulous attention to detail, with leather-wrapped seats, polished controls, and a unique steering wheel design. However, the floating center console, while visually appealing, lacked practicality. The 33-inch OLED display was a standout feature, offering a seamless integration of technology without overwhelming the cabin's design.

Performance

2022 Porsche Macan

10/10

2024 Cadillac LYRIQ

5/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powertrains, with the base model featuring a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Macan GTS inherited a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 from the previous Macan Turbo, delivering 434 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Our Macan S test car was equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6, generating 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This setup allowed the Macan S to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. The Macan's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system provided a dynamic driving experience, with re-tuned steering and suspension enhancing ride and handling. The Macan S excelled on twisty roads, offering precise steering, strong brakes, and impressive stability, though its fuel economy was modest at 18.1 mpg.

The 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ, while not as sporty as its exterior suggested, excelled in long-distance comfort. The dual-motor powertrain in our test car produced 500 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, with a 102-kilowatt-hour battery pack offering a range of up to 314 miles with rear-wheel drive. However, real-world testing showed a range closer to 260 miles. The LYRIQ's handling was hindered by its substantial weight of 5,800 pounds, resulting in understeer and less agile cornering compared to other Cadillac models. Despite its weight, the LYRIQ offered a smooth ride, with regenerative braking and strong stopping power. However, the absence of handling-enhancing features like torque vectoring and magnetic dampers was noticeable, and the steering lacked the precision typically associated with Cadillac.

Form and function

2024 Cadillac LYRIQ

5/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan provided a comfortable experience for the driver and front-seat passenger, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats offering heating and ventilation. However, rear-seat space was limited, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned center console with haptic touch controls offered a modern look but required drivers to divert their attention from the road. Cargo space was modest, with 17.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable to 53 cubic feet with the seats folded.

The 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ faced challenges with build quality, as misaligned rear fenders and a malfunctioning charging port were noted. The interior offered generous headroom and legroom, but cargo space was limited to 28 cubic feet behind the seats, expanding to 60.8 cubic feet when folded. The floating console, while stylish, lacked practicality, and the glovebox was inconvenient to access while driving. The rotary selector for the touchscreen was less intuitive than direct touch interaction, and some controls were confusingly placed.

Technology

The 2022 Porsche Macan came equipped with a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a navigation system. The system was intuitive, though voice recognition was less reliable compared to competitors. Physical controls for volume and climate settings provided ease of use, reducing the need for frequent interaction with the touchscreen.

The 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ's 33-inch OLED screen was a highlight, offering a touch-enabled section for lighting and trip information. The infotainment system ran native Google Maps and Google Assistant, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The Super Cruise system provided an excellent hands-free driving experience, and the 19-speaker AKG stereo delivered impressive sound quality.

Safety

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning as standard. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. While these systems performed well, the Macan lacked more advanced driving assistance technologies.

The 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ offered forward automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and Cadillac's Safety Alert Seat as standard. Optional features included adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, and rear emergency braking. However, the LYRIQ had not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS at the time of writing.
